I have a question and I hope someone can help me,my husband got approved for his visa today and I was wondering if we book for a one way flight..

Doesn't matter if it is one way or round trip.  I would choose the more economical.

when booking the flight make sure it is one ticket with layovers ONLY

with a valid US visa most layovers do not require transit visa

but if your itinerary says flight to (say france) and then pick up ticket from Paris to US ,  u need french transit visa

otherwise all boarding passes given at place of departure are needed

BTW some Canadian international ports do US customs and immigration (Toronto and Montreal do)

Congratulations!  @JeanneAdilis correct.  As long as you stay within the international terminal, you should be fine.  They cannot exit, else visa.

The timeline shows he waited 5 years for this. When the visa is in hand he should take the first flight available. Use https://www.iatatravelcentre.com to verify that his immigration visa grants him a transit visa waiver for the itinerary, and then go.
 

I have seen too many cases where the consulate withdraws the visa after approval. Once he enters the U.S. on his IR-1, it is either too late to withdraw, or he has the benefit of Due Process to fight the State department.

Don't book a flight until Visa is in hand.!!!!     

 

Book the cheapest way, round trip most likely will be the cheapest.
