How to answer question about previous marriages.

I am in the process of filling form N-400, I came across part 10, Question 9, they asked about previous spouse immigration status when marriage ended. My first husband was undocumented, I don’t think that would be a problem but for some reason I feel uneasy answering this question, I am not sure what to write on the “explain box”, what would be the appropriate term? Ilegal Immigrant, Undocumented? Unlawful Resident? Has anyone else been in this situation? TIA.

Good question.  "Unlawfully Present"???? "Undocumented"??

I think the question is about your time with that person, when u got divorced, not his status in the country, 

when I did my N400 I didn’t have to say anything about my ex, just that i was divorced and the documents were there to prove it, and during the interview I didn’t get asked about that part of my life
