Keep in mind alterations for a wedding dress can run into several hundred - esp if it needs major revisions because you bought it too big/small online....

This is true, but... chances are you're not going to buy the David's Bridal dress right off the rack, either. Most wedding gowns have to be altered to fit the bride because most wedding gowns are sold 'long.' (If you're really tall and not curvy this might not be an issue.) I'm petite but, uh, busty, so any dress that fit in the bodice was going to be too big in the waist and about 12 inches too long.

I figured that any dress I bought would have to be altered significantly, so I could pay several hundred dollars and then another $300 on alterations, or $90 and then another $300 on alterations. So while alterations were expensive, I think I still came out ahead on the deal.

I did buy mine off the rack at a salon & it was close to fitting except .5" of hemming! Luckily too, cuz my dress was all beaded & woulda cost a fortune to alter.

Lucky you! That's another thing to consider: the simpler the gown, the easier the alterations. N.B. a gown with seven layers of tulle and beadwork on the outermost layer is not simple. They had to take up the hemline on my gown through the waist!

My gown was off the rack and heavily beaded as well. Unfortunately, the lady who measured me at the store ordered a size larger than I needed so it literally fell off the first time I tried it on. I nearly cried thinking of all the altering it was going to need. The store didn't seem to give a rats as$ about helping me fix their problem of ordering the wrong size (a vent for another day), so I asked around on theknot.com for a good seamstress. At that point I didn't really even care how much $$$ it was going to cost, but as luck would have it, I found an absolutely fantastic woman who only charged about $150.00 for everything. So if you aren't already on theknot, I would suggest checking it out and maybe even asking your question there too.

As for regular size vs. bridal size - wouldn't you think designers would realize that this is the WORST time to be telling a woman that she is bigger than she normally is?!

I bought mine on eBay, new, for $90. It was a discontinued style.

I figured most wedding dresses look about the same once you decide on a general style. And no matter the gown, you're going to get it altered anyway (so that's a sunk cost.) The gown I found was a size or two larger than I normally wear (wedding dresses run smaller than other dresses), so it could be taken in easily.

Hey caladan, that is actually funny you say that because I was told it is the exact opposite. I'm a 10 in a dress and I had to get a size 16 wedding dress! I was told wedding dresses actually fit very small.

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

I have ordered my dress online. I will receive it on the 20th after I am back in the States. I have heard good things about this site and they have a reasonable return policy.

I'll let you know how it works out when I receive it. I'll just have to pay for any alterations and to get it steamed/ironed.

But for the dress I've ordered, it's a petty good deal.
