Trump permits Jan. 6-related lawsuits against him to advance — for now

The former president decided against asking the Supreme Court to intervene and declare him immune but signaled he may challenge the suits later.

That means at least three lawsuits brought against him in the aftermath of the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol can advance to the next phase — a period of limited evidence-gathering related to Trump’s activities on Jan. 6, 2021 and whether they were official or political in nature.

The lawsuits — brought by members of Congress and police officers scarred by the attack — have been pending since 2021 but delayed amid Trump’s bid for the courts to declare him immune from lawsuits related to his actions as president

How will Donald Trump pay the $438m he owes in penalties from civil trials?

Two giant penalties handed down in a matter of weeks will cost him millions – and that’s only part of what he could owe

In a matter of weeks, Donald Trump was hit with two giant penalties from two civil trials in New York – $83m for defamation against the writer E Jean Carroll and $354.9m for inflating the value of his assets on government financial statements.

The verdicts combined will cost him some $438m, and that’s only part of what Trump could owe across numerous lawsuits. The payments will probably create a sizable dent in his wallet

Both will get appealed and, once they’re out of the heavily-weighted battlegrounds they were tried in, it is to be hoped some semblance of rationality might set in.

Especially in the “fraud” case, which represents a victimless crime, the judgement seems designed to either be appealed, or be featured in an episode of Ridiculousness on MTV. 😒

Ah..perhaps he will be accorded a speedy appellate process ..though not sure he wants a quick decision

The continuing legal exposure seems to be doing his polling numbers the world of good. Probably NOT what the DNC/Never Trumpers envisaged when these balls started rolling. 🤔

I suspect the judgement was so that this judge gets himself invited to the right parties in NYC.

From what I've read of this case, the judge had his mind made up beforehand and is rather supercilious.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

And apparently according to this judge, only tax assessment valuation on property can be used by a company to get a loan.  Seems pretty socialist to me.

This is a powerful summation, worth a read.

The New York judge's non-legal, hyper-partisan ruling will only make Trump stronger

One of the tricks of knowing when a leftist judge is pulling a fast one is if the decision is really, really long.  Doing this, as W.S. Gilbert would have said, is intended to "lend an air of verisimilitude to an otherwise unconvincing narrative."  In modern English: it hides the dishonesty.  The fact that Judge Arthur Engoron, who repeatedly showed his partisan stripes, needed 92 pages to impose an almost $400 million hit-job judgment against Trump is just another phase in the Democrat establishment's war against America.  This won’t harm Trump.  It will only make him greater.

Hiding behind the 92 pages of legal-sounding garbage are some simple facts.  [...]

Obscene award against Trump is testing the New York legal system's integrity

[...] Attorney General Letitia James declared not only that Trump would be barred from doing business in New York for three years, but that the damages would come to roughly $460 million once interest was included.

That makes the damages against Trump greater than the gross national product of some countries, including Micronesia.  Yet the court admitted that not a single dollar was lost by the banks from these dealings.  Indeed, witnesses testified that they wanted to do more business with Trump, who was described as [...]

I loved it when she said this (below).  The fact that what Trump did is standard practice in the NYC real-estate market, how can any business there really believe a politician, particularly a Democrat politician.

'I think that this is really an extraordinary, unusual circumstance that the law-abiding and rule-following New Yorkers who are business people have nothing to worry about, because they’re very different than Donald Trump and his behavior,' Hochul responded.
