The wife wants to buy her 5 and 7 year old grandsons a cat.  The wife's daughter (grandson's mom) has mild allergies to cats.  My wife thinks that a hairless cat (Sphynx cat) is the answer.  I'm against it for several reasons.  The children's father is not keen on getting any new animals (they had a small dog that passed away a few years ago).  Not only do I find this breed of cat extremely ugly, I am worried about them taking care of it.

 

What can you tell me?  Do these cats require extra attention?  Of course this would be a house cat.

Never heard of such a thing, but it does pretty well describe my ex-wife.

 

 

I know a 5 year old and 7 year old won't be responsible.  They can't even take care of themselves or even clean their own room.

 

Thanks everyone.  I've about convinced my wife to scrap this idea.

If they want an animal they can get their own, but in my wife's mind that is the problem.  If someone doesn't do it for them it won't happen and kids deserve to have a pet....or so my wife says.

 

An update on the "Cat for the Kids" idea.  

 

Had my wife fairly well convinced not to buy an specialty cat for the kids, then she was thinking about a kitten from the shelter.  Then the kids came and visited us for several days and with their wild and bad behavior it was easy to point out to my wife they were not ready for an animal.

 

Fast forward about 4 weeks and....now WE have a new addition to our family!  The absolutely cutest and sweetest 4 month old Maltese puppy to go along with our 17+ year old (failing) Maltese.   We are on our second week with her.  Sorry, I know this is a cat thread but had to share.

My fiance has a very very sweet older cat lady who is.. absolutely obsessed with him. She loves on him constantly, and merely tolerates everyone else, although she likes to sit in the middle of room when he has people over.

I have spent every visit giving her both space and any cuddles she comes and asks for. She seems to like me, enough. Nothing compared to him, ofcourse, but I am in the top 3. 

 

The last time I visited, in October, she was sitting on his lap and headbutted him (which she does all the time), and she turned to me, I put my head forward... and she headbutted me too.

 

I would say I nearly cried, but that would be a lie, because I full-on cried. XD

 

He is not the only one working hard to make sure he has a good relationship with his future step-kids! XD And I love her so much already, lol. (Could never have my own cat, my mom was allergic).

You've been Accepted, N ma'am.

 

True story:  Years ago when Cat T-B. #1 was alive, I was lazing in bed too long past her breakfast time.  She sat on my stomach, head-butted me, and then turned around and farted on me.  I got up rather more rapidly than usual.
