Hi Tracy, I just saw in your post about K1s getting SSA and read the link you had mentioned.....I got my SS# in my maiden name and it dos say with Allowed to work with DHS authorization..but as per the link on K1 you are allowed to work! I had another leading question...why do most people apply for EAD then? Why not just wait for Green card? Please make me understand this USCIS-SSA system of things? I am so lost and would have been further lost without VJ....right now i am so frustarted not being able to get my drivers license as my I-94 expires in less than 60 days :(

You're confusing things a bit. As a K1er, you have work authorization for SSA's purposes ONLY.

For immigration purposes, you need the EAD to work - which is what the note on your SS card refers to ('Allowed to work with DHS authorization'). Employers will thus need both your social security number and the EAD in order to legally employ you.

The reason people apply for the EAD is generally because it can take a while to receive the green card, and most folks want to be able to work while they wait for it. I hope that makes sense.

I'm sure you *technically* could 'get through', depending on how lax the potential employer may be. But I wouldn't suggest it, as working w/out EAD is working illegally.

Why put yourself in the position of having to explain that at an AOS interview?

garya,

Indeed it is. Did you read her post, only 2 above yours in this thread?

Yes I did.

And what part of it did you not understand?

I understood all of it. What's your point?

I thought it was obvious. But at any rate - I don't understand how you can't see that Shona's case is different from the others in this thread (or how it's somehow 'fishy').

You seem to have an attitude problem. May I suggest a massage, a cup of green tea, or perhaps a visit to your local comedy club? ;)

A massage would be great, actually!

I am the instigator after all! :D:jest:

But seriously, I honestly don't understand what seemed 'fishy' to you about the progress Shona's case (compared to others).

For the love of sunshine, shona filed to a different service center under a different category for adjustment of status! It's like calling something fishy because someone's K-1 at Vermont was processed faster than someone's K-3 at California. DIFFERENT SERVICE CENTER. DIFFERENT ELIGIBILITY CATEGORY.

Thank you Tracy and Caladan,

It's bad enough having to do it this way and then someone say it's fishy. I suspect garya505 is somewhat agitated because he hasn't heard anything yet. As I have learnt through my long process all good things come to those wait. It's stressful as it and the less spitefulness the better.
