I'm studying for the civics test using the booklet that they gave me at the biometrics center and the file from the USCIS website (the questions are the same on both). I noticed that there are questions that have multiple answers with bullet points but it's not clear to me for all of them, which ones would require me to list all the points in my answer and which ones are simply suggesting different forms of the answer. Here are some examples:

8. What did the Declaration of Independence do?

▪ announced our independence (from Great Britain)

▪ declared our independence (from Great Britain)

▪ said that the United States is free (from Great Britain)

25. Why do some states have more Representatives than other states?

▪ (because of) the state’s population

▪ (because) they have more people

▪ (because) some states have more people

59. Who lived in America before the Europeans arrived?

▪ American Indians

▪ Native Americans

It seems to me that these are different correct versions of the answer and that I would only need to state one of them. For the following questions for example, I'm not sure if the bullet points also represent different versions of the correct answer and I only need to state one of them, or if I need to list all of them:

2. What does the Constitution do?

▪ sets up the government

▪ defines the government

▪ protects basic rights of Americans

4. What is an amendment?

▪ a change (to the Constitution)

▪ an addition (to the Constitution)

12. What is the “rule of law”?

▪ Everyone must follow the law.

▪ Leaders must obey the law.

▪ Government must obey the law.

▪ No one is above the law.

16. Who makes federal laws?

▪ Congress

▪ Senate and House (of Representatives)

▪ (U.S. or national) legislature

37. What does the judicial branch do?

▪ reviews laws

▪ explains laws

▪ resolves disputes (disagreements)

▪ decides if a law goes against the Constitution

61. Why did the colonists fight the British?

▪ because of high taxes (taxation without representation)

▪ because the British army stayed in their houses (boarding, quartering)

▪ because they didn’t have self-government

Hi. I am studying for my civics test and I'm not sure how to figure out what the answer is to the following question:

23. Name your U.S. Representative.

▪ Answers will vary. [Residents of territories with nonvoting Delegates or Resident Commissioners may provide the name of that Delegate or Commissioner. Also acceptable is any statement that the territory has no (voting) Representatives in Congress.]

Read page 1 of the booklet. It answers your question, just what @beloved_dingo said

Immigration journey is not: fast, for the faint at heart, easy, cheap, for the impatient nor right away. If more than 50% of this applies to you, best get off the bus.

I read it. It does not state what @beloved_dingo said. Maybe you have a different version of the booklet than what I have.

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

The booklet or downloadable flash cards list all correct answers and also state if one or more is required.  My husband chose the minimum number (e.g., 1 out of a list of 3) for each question that has multiple correct answers, and just memorized those.  For example for this question he only memorized the second choice and ignored the others:

8. What did the Declaration of Independence do?

▪ announced our independence (from Great Britain)

▪ declared our independence (from Great Britain)

▪ said that the United States is free (from Great Britain)

It's obvious for that question that the points listed are just different versions of the answer, but what about, for example, this question:

2. What does the Constitution do?

▪ sets up the government

▪ defines the government

▪ protects basic rights of Americans

Again, you only need one of the above acceptable responses.

It does. I took this same test last year.

Go get the online booklet. Just Google N400 civic test USCIS.

I downloaded the official 100 question list from USCIS.  Wife studied them for a couple weeks....done.  The official list indicates how many items must be answered for each question.
