Summer 2023: Which movie do you want to see?

There's been a lot of hubbub about these two films. Let's see which one VJ'ers perfer.

Read enough history of Oppenheimer and the Manhattan Project that I don't really need to see a film that more than likely takes a bit of artistic license.  As to Barbie, not really interested, I was a G.I. Joe kind of kid.

 

Interesting article of a meeting with Oppenheimer and Arthur Compton at a lake in Southwest Michigan discussing what many think was Oppenheimer's misgivings of the H-bomb.  Interesting read, and much better than any movie.

Exactly. Biopic drama versus lighthearted comedy. I think Barbie will make more money just because comedies do better than dramas usually. Although Oppenheimer seems to be pretty popular too.

 

Frankly I'm just glad to see Hollywood sink money into something that isn't the billionth Star Wars or Marvel sequel. Nice to have a change of pace and some new ideas actually given attention.

This is so true! I used to love going to the movies, but over the last 5+ years there have been very few movies I've been excited to see. 

 

I think we are going to see both of them, but I had no interest in dealing with the opening weekend. I really liked Cillian Murphy in Peaky Blinders and I have heard Oppenheimer is good, but too long. We may go see it next weekend. 

 

I was on the fence about Barbie for awhile but it seems like silly fun and I like how colorful it is. My husband also said he'd go with me so why not 😅

I like History, not that keen on Hollywood history, faction, I would rather they stick to the story or just go with something obviously not related.

 

I am not familiar with Barbie at all, I know of Ken so would have no reason to notice any issues with the Barbie lore assuming there is one so Barbie all the way.

 

Interesting fact, when they first produced Barbie dolls they were made in Japan and the samples had nipples and one of the guys involved was tasked with removing them and sending the samples back. Happened a few times before they got the idea.

I have seen both.

 

Oppenheimer is interesting but difficult to follow like most Nolan movies. I had the advantage of having read the novel The Oppenheimer Alternative.

 

Barbie however inadvertently ended up being a message that was anti-feminist and pro-patriarchal.

The second act depicts a Ken-dom that is manifestly superior and less  vapid than the Barbie-land it replaced. In Ken-dom, while males are now dominant, the hold females with less disdain than females held males in the original Barbie-land of the first act.

 

By the third act, Barbie-land is partially restored, with males now holding more power than in the first Act. The male protagonist is no longer a slave forced to live on the beach and do only beach stuff.

 

I think you have to go back to the 1980s to when there were two anti woke movies slaying the box office.

Big fan of the Patriarchy!

 

I remember watching Dunkirk, now there were bits I liked but...

 

What were the Spitfires doing so low? They should have been 20,000ft higher.

 

Dunkirk itself was blasted to smithereens, seemed more like Barbiland.

 

And the beaches looked empty.

 

And of course it seriously lacked Diversity Inclusion and Equity.
