EV laggard Toyota says its next-gen EVs will have over 600 miles range

700 mile range with 10 min charging time. If this happens it might make me want an EV. Toyota has not been real big on EV's up until this point. We got and sold 2 of the BZR4X New Toyota EVs. I was not impressed. We have done fairly will in the used Tesla market however.  What is really cool on the Tesla is you can program the horn to sound like a fart. Thats enough for me to want one

It will be interesting to see, but the big dal will be mass production, and to charge a vehicle full in 10 minutes you will need a lot of power at the charging station.

Unless they are cheap and chips and very light it would be more logical to have the size.

And you would need a 1200kw supply if I have done my maths right, the equivalent of a 1,000 average houses. Or a gas station dispensing 6000 gallons a day. That  is a lot of juice.

Toyota I read are losing a bundle and this is years ahead and if the technology and manufacturing process are know it will just be copied.

The big market is of course in mass transportation, no point if this going be competing with Lucid.

The biggest thing that has not been completely fleshed out yet, is the insurance costs of EVs.  With solid state batteries, it will become even more so as one thing no one ever talks about is how durable the batteries are to vibration and shocks.  If an expensive EV needs to be totaled because the battery may be damaged from a minor impact, or the solid electrolyte breaks down given normal road vibrations, it will cost insurance companies a lot.  EVs are still very much in the Early Adopter phase, and there is still a lot to learn about the full impacts of their adoption.

OK.  That would be real progress.  That range would certainly help planning a long trip easier.

Well said. Toyota is not fully sold on EVs with current technology but are big on hybrids.  All Toyota vans are now hybrid. They are in such demand people are waiting in line to pay 5k or more over sticker

The Graun had an article and somebody else in the comments did the same calculation. Anyway the power demand is not that different to an Electric Locomotive. As far as I can see no Journo has asked this somewhat obvious question.

So... I saw Toyota mentioned on YouTube with a claim of a 740 mile range, and a ten minute charge time...
Now... My EV (and I'll round numbers up and down for simplicity...) returns 4 miles per kWh. Let's say the Toyota returns 6 miles per kWh, on the basis of a lighter battery... So would need 750 (miles)/(6 miles per kWh) of charge for the journey, or 125kWh of charge, which, delivered in 10 minutes (1/6th of an hour) needs a 125 x 6 or 750kW supply... at 400v, that's 1,875amps... And I just tried to find a suitable flexible cable construction and cross sectional area for that current... I couldn't find one... Suffice to say, the cable capable of delivering that much current will be too heavy to be manhandled, the charging connector will have to be mechanically manipulated, even if the cable's water cooled (like some welder cables)

Getting closer to needing 1.21 GW available at the charging station.  Now if we can control and harness lightning it may work.

Awhile back, someone sent me a video of a heavy construction vehicle crushing a Prius.  Sounds like time to do the same with EVs.

I am not sure it is needed to get the gist but if anybody needs any the terms translated just shout.

I can see a market opportunity for people specialising in EV's, there is already one for repairing Battery Packs for example which none of the Manufacturers want to do.

I have not come across any good examples of multiple vehicle pile ups where lots of EVs are involved, I can see that getting messy.

Insurance is interesting, even an average EV is a rocket ship compared to ICE, plus the repair issues. I wondered if the like of Tesla being able to harvest data would give them an edge.
