Hi everyone -

I am sure this has been touched upon before and I am sorry if I am asking the obvious but I wanted to know if anyone else has had this problem.

I came here on K3, received my EAD on March 10 and received my SSN the following week or March 17.

I have been offered a job and they are currently doing a BA (background check). However now there seems to be a problem with my SSN as it’s not recognized?

Has anyone experienced this before? And if so – is there anything I or the potential employer can do in the interim?

Thanks for your help!

I'm not sure what you mean by "unrecognized", but you could call the 1-800 number for the SSA. It's on their website. I had to call one time and you might have to wait on hold for 10 or 15 minutes, but you can actually speak to a "live" person.

Good luck.

Just an educated guess.

If your SSN was recently assign it may not appear on the current “High Group” list or company is using an outdated list.

You can find the current “High Group” issued listed on our Website at:

http://www.ssa.gov/employer/highgroup.txt

The “High Group” list shows the highest Group number that has been assign within each SSN Area.

Example:

1 2 3 - 4 5 - 6 7 8 9

Area Group Serial

If your SSN Group within your SSN area does not appear on the current list; you will need to wait until the next list is issued for the Group number to appear on the list.

If your SSN Group within your SSN Area does appear on the current list and there is an asterisk next to the Group number, i.e. 049 06*, then it is the first time that Group has appeared on the listed and the company is most likely using an old list.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Employers can contact SSA to authenticate an SSN, but SSA will only verify SSNs for current and former employees. Employers can call the SSA toll-free number, 1-800-772-1213 for this service. Employers need to provide their employer identification number (EIN) and the employee's SSN, name, date of birth and sex when calling. SSA will only disclose if the information provided does or does not match our records and in cases of mismatch SSA does not disclose which information did not match.

My husband's wasn't recognized by one company's automated check; they said they only get the updates once a month, so I had to fax them a copy of the card and it was no problem.
