Is an LPR ineligible to apply for citizenship if diagnosed with depression or other mental illness

A family member who is eligible for naturalisation a few months from now has been diagnosed with major depressive disorder which is termed as mental illness. However he is undergoing treatment for the same with a psychiatrist. He has no other health issues nor is he on benefits or any such and never has been and clean medical history What are his chances of becoming a citizen when he applies....

This is a form for seeking a medical exception to civics and English tests on N-400.

Based on what OP mentioned, how real or feasible are the chances of getting it granted without the need for the tests?

I am guessing the OP's friend would also need to provide proof of diagnosis and a potential letter from the psychiatrist?

Even if one takes the tests succesfully, is it not required that the individual be of sound mind without any mental illness.. they count depression as mental illness when a person goes to a doctor and is diagnosed

I was not asking Mike trying to question your post or legitimacy.  I am trying to gage the chances of being able to do this successfully and how many get it approved as I was not aware of this particular form and would like to know for educational purposes and assist others in the future.

The form says:

 

Part 4. Ability to Understand Oath of Allegiance

The applicant will not be able to naturalize without a legal guardian, surrogate, or an eligible designated representative unless they are able to understand and communicate that they understand the meaning of the Oath of Allegiance. The Oath may be administered in the applicant's language of choice and they may communicate their understanding in any manner (for example, by nodding).

So if OP’s friend is under a legal incapacity or can convince the clinician that the oath is understood, then naturalization is possible.

No, there is no requirement to not have a mental illness. It's very common to have depression. In no way does this mean your relative is ineligible for naturalization.... Where does that idea even come from?

Actually... they do ask you if you have been diagnosed with a depressive disorder and/or suicidality disorder or any other mental illness that could affect your judgement.

 

Now, you can just say no (which is technically lying) or you can be forthcoming and say yes but here is a letter from my doctor that I am of sound judgment and I am getting treatment.
