Leftist Senators Call on Garland To Sue the Oil Industry

 

Senators Bernie Sanders, Jeffrey A. Merkley, Edward J. Markey, and Elizabeth Warren have sent a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland urging him to sue the major fossil fuel companies. The foursome claims, “The actions of ExxonMobil, Shell, and potentially other fossil fuel companies represent a clear violation of federal racketeering laws, truth in advertising laws, consumer protection laws, and potentially other laws, and the Department must act swiftly to hold them accountable for their unlawful actions.”

 

You can be sure that Garland will be all too happy to comply if for no other reason than to provide yet another distraction from the news of the day. Oh, and because of climate change.

Heads up, hybrid fans: Ford Motor is working on a whole bunch of new hybrid models.

 

“You’re going to see a lot more hybrid systems from us,” CEO Jim Farley said Thursday after the company reported second-quarter earnings that revealed widening losses on its electric vehicles unit.

 

The comments run slightly counter to recent messaging from the Detroit automakers, which have touted the performance and popularity of all-electric favorites as the industry moves to meet EV targets. The hybrid hype, however, falls more closely in line with global hybrid leader Toyota, which has faced criticism for what some saw as resistance to the EV transition.

 

To be clear, Ford isn’t turning away from its much-touted EV push, though it said Thursday that its EV ramp-up may take longer than it had previously anticipated.

I keep hearing EVs are so cheap because everyone charges them at home.  Hmm, seems to be a bit mythical.

 

Most cars still cost more to charge than to fill up with gas

 

It's not yet cheaper to charge many electric cars than it would be to fuel their gas-powered counterparts up with gas, a new study indicates.

 

The cost of filling up at a gas station versus plugging in — and whether those two match up — largely depends on the segment and price, a study from Anderson Economic Group suggests, published Tuesday.

 

Trucks cost about the same to fuel and charge, while entry and midlevel cars and SUVs cost more to charge at home and in public than they do to fuel at a gas station, the group found. Luxury cars and SUVs fall somewhere in the middle.

My wife has a tesla, so I was scratching my head at the linked article for a moment. Charging at home is more expensive than the superchargers. Even with that, it's about $15 per 100 miles (home charging), whereas my mustang is about $27 per 100 miles. But that is California, and I don't know the rates elsewhere. I do know that every time Texas has one of their grid meltdowns my cousin can't charge his car for a few weeks until electricity prices go down from the absurd rates. So I suppose in a state like Texas, who has a crumbling infrastructure and not exactly reliable energy grid (Except El Paso), it would be quite a bit more expensive charging at home.

It appears this was done as a full view, and not a study of any specific region.  I know I did a study locally when we were replacing my wife's car, and we would save money charging, but the payback on comparable vehicles was something like 13 years and that assumed no increase of electricity rates (I also included basic maintenance such as oil changes to the operating costs of the ICE).  Since we only plan to keep the vehicle for 3-4 years, it made no economic sense.  Also considering the fact that EVs can or may emit more CO2 over the life of the vehicle (see previously posted Manhattan Institute Analysis), we decided to stay with the ICE powered vehicle.
