Risk of Problem Drinking Rises Among Thirty-Something Women

 

This growing trend in women who are delaying or foregoing parenting is contributing to an increase in women at highest risk for excessive alcohol use, according to a new study led by Boston University School of Public Health (BUSPH) and Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health. Katherine Keyes, professor of Epidemiology at Columbia Public Health, is senior author of the study.

 

Published in the journal Addiction(link is external and opens in a new window), the study found that women in their mid-30s, as well as women who have not had children by age 35, are the subgroups of women at highest risk of binge drinking and having alcohol use disorder (AUD) symptoms. 

 

The study is the first to consider the impact of delayed parenting on excessive alcohol use among newer generations of middle-aged women. The findings underscore the need to address excessive drinking among all women, but particularly among this expanding group of women without children.

 

“Because more women are delaying having children in the U.S., a growing proportion of women fall into the highest risk group,” says study lead author Rachel Sayko Adams, research associate professor of health law, policy & management at BUSPH. “This growing prevalence of heavy drinking is exacerbated given that excessive alcohol use is increasing overall for middle-aged women in more recent cohorts. Therefore, at-risk alcohol use and consequences are expected to continue increasing in future years, if not addressed.”

I've noticed a concerning amount of alcohol consumption in this group.

 

The group called "wine moms" is also not ignorable.  These are housewives who absolutely cannot seem to do without a glass of wine or two (or more) daily.  I've never been able to understand this.

My mom had eight and I don't think I ever saw her drinking alcohol.

It is 99 degrees (granted a bit cool) as I type this. Of course Mrs E is going to drink sangria today. And each day for the  rest of the summer. In the pool usually.

 

Then when it starts snowing, of course she is going to drink wine. Sometimes in the hot tub.

 

Last week we had a game of  find and kill the 3 inch scorpion before bed time.

 

He was a sneak.  We got him. We celebrated with a glass of whisky. He celebrated in a bath of insecticide.

Drinking to excess and alcoholism addiction is usually due to something fundamentally lacking in someone's life, trauma, or pattern of abuse that is generational. That has little to do with whether a woman has children or not as there are plenty of married (with kids) women and men that are alcoholics. It's easy to see a bit of conflicting messaging in this article - women without kids are drinking (no kidding) but so too are women with kids (as it then talks a lot about 'wine mom' culture). It doesn't address what men are doing, but I suspect they are doing the same thing.

 

There is a reason why my grandmother loved her alcohol and cigarettes, my dad was an alcoholic and his brother did drugs. Both men thankfully broke that cycle. But that does not mean their issues around unhappiness, trauma, or shame were resolved. My mom never touched alcohol, but she was definitely fundamentally unhappy in her life and so things other than alcoholism was her replacement cope (and they were also not good). The husband and I personally love a good drink, and I can understand how easy it would be lose oneself there. But we keep drinking to special occasions only and for health reasons I have not had a drink in quite some time. Being single has not changed my outlook on drinking, nor has being married, and nor will having kids.

I personally quit drinking in 2008, totally by accident I might add. I got divorced and totally lost the desire to drink alcohol.

  marriage causes drinking.  divorce solves it.
