Received Jury Summons letter as LPR

Hi, I received a Jury Summons letter in the mail.

I am a LPR living in California.

AFAIK Jury Duty is only applicable to US Citizens.

What should I do in this case? Call the number and state I am not eligible because I am not a US citizen?

Thank you

California is one of the states where jurors for non federal trials must be U.S. citizens. Jurors for federal trials must be U.S. citizens everywhere.

Every California jury summons I have received has had an option by mail or online to request to be excused from duty, with reason. When the reason is: “I am not a U.S. citizen” I have always had to provide a copy of my green card. Went through that twice in California. IME you will get a summons once every 5 years as they assume you naturalized.

Please post your summons so that you can be walked through the process.

just mail it back. there's box to fill out on the form. i cant remember because it was back in 2019.  it happened to me even before i become LPR because NY state pulled the data from DMV or perhaps i even did it online when i responded because theres option for that

Same, I have gotten this (in CA) before and after I became an LPR. I don't think the state system knows whether you are a citizen or not anyway. Just decline it stating you are not a citizen. IIRC I did it online as I don't recall ever mailing back anything.

I would report to the summons on the date u r suppose to

and show your green card

California has scam alerts for court duty and sending copy of green card is a bit scary

At least in Santa Clara county that is simply not the process. I doubt it is the process where OP lives. Maybe in one those California  counties in the depopulated areas out east.

Example:

https://www.scscourt.org/online_services/jury/jury_duty_respond_summons.shtml

OPTION 😄 If you are NOT QUALIFIED OR UNABLE to serve and would like to request a disqualification or excuse:

Register by verifying/updating your personal information and submit your request for disqualification or excuse through the Prospective Juror Login Website. Select button below.

juror instructions

One can find the web site for jurors in the county or federal court district and file the request to be excused.

Greetings!

The summon letter has a form to be filled out, either you answer that and send it back via slow mail or I highly suggest doing it online as it is the easiest and the best way. If you noticed, the form has a question, if you are a US citizen or not, that is enough for you to be disqualified as a juror, do it, online it is faster and then you can have the result right away. I think you have 10 days to reply.

As a gc holder, my big rule was never remove my gc from my wallet while outside my home except for airlines, cruise lines, INS, BP, and later DHS.

Bringing my gc to a court house for a show and tell is an excellent way to lose your gc to people who neither care nor  understand that loss of  gc is disastrous for an LPR.  There is no control over the situation once you enter a place with armed deputies.

Recall all the GCs SSA lost during covid.

So before court houses had internet, sending a photo copy was the lesser evil. In 2023, there are processes to upload images.

I am out

After making a copy for your records!

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

I got one a while ago, too - also California.  Go on the webpage that's on the notice- and give answer the question about being a citizen with NO and therefore not eligible. They use dmv data, they don't know about your citizenship.
