Insurance for Uhaul truck crossing from Canada to US

Hi,

Planning on moving my belongings & my car using a Uhaul truck & trailer from Vancouver to Los Angeles. Need advice on purchasing insurance for the Uhaul truck & trailer. Apparently Uhaul does not offer their typical insurance options in Canada. They only offer CDW, which isn't much ans is too risky for such a long trip. Anyone knows of alternative insurance that will cover liability, collision and content?

Thanks in advance.

Ask your Auto Insurer?

Not fun, but what if you rented until the first US town, and transferred to a US U-haul truck there? How much more would it be to use PODS or another company to move your goods, and you drive your car?

---

Our personal experience with U-Haul was... not great.  We rented a trailer.  With the excitement of the move, did not inspect it properly and, once packed, we realized that we would not be able to drive it long distance.  Had to go to another location and switch my goods to a safer trailer.

I have heard many stories of U-Haul trailers not being maintained.  Personally, my friends were hauling a vehicle from MI to AZ and one of the wheels came off in OK.

To the OP, I agree with @Lemonslice, I would look at using PODS, or transferring to a US rented truck soon after crossing the border.

Good Luck!

I haven't checked Pods, but i checked U-pack, similar concept, price was higher then U-haul for the truck & trailer.

Timing of when the belongings arrive to Los Angeles is an issue and i am trying to avoid putting the mileage on my car. That is why the U-haul is attractive as i can control the timing and I'm doing the trip once for both the belongings and the car without adding millage to the car.

I read that people do cross the border with U-haul and I'm just wondering how they deal with the insurance. I can't be that hard.

I'm going to explore the option of transferring across the border to a US based u-haul and see if i get their insurance options. but just the thought of loading, emptying the tand loading again in the span of a couple of hours, is not attractive.

I rented a Uhaul and drove it from around Milton to Long Island, NY.

I rented it for 4 days. They gave me 662 miles allowance. I did around 580-600.

Rental charge was $991.

There was a coverage that I bought for $75 called Safe Move.

Total Charges were $1066 without taxes,

Around $1200 including taxes.

I drove the Uhaul in January so from Canada all the way through Upstate, roads were mostly covered with snow. But the truck was in a good condition and I had no issues at all.

Just make sure you take lots of pictures at the time of pick up and drop off so they do not charge you for anything later.

SafeMove Plus is the one that covers Liability Insurance, now I do not know if it covers international usage and the limit is only $1m.
