Congratulations!!  They told him on the spot he was approved?

Thank you! Yep, they did - and his CEAC status is already changed to "Issued" 😊

The officer he dealt with was really pleasant; he said "I like telling people yes" lol

Hi Everyone,

My wife has her Interview soon at the US Consulate in Montreal. We drove by the address and could not figure out where it is exactly. There was no signage or American flag outside the building. It seems to be beside a Royal Bank on the corner of St. Catherine and Stanley, in an anonymous building with 1134 beside the door. Does this sound right? The address we have is:

U.S. Consulate General Montreal 1134, Rue Ste-Catherine West Montreal, QC H3B1H4.

Thanks!

Yes, the building is, from what I understand, very nondescript.

Question -

The immigrant fee handout with husband's A Number: will that be included in the packet with his passport/visa when it is mailed back?

Thanks so much for verifying the nondescript US Consulate location in MTL! I am unsure about how to answer your question. We do not have an A number going into the interview. I believe it is distributed after the interview as part of the Green card--at least in our case.

Yes, I know its after - my question was actually separate from my answer to yours.

Interview Friday for us. Triple checking everything we need to bring. Question - my wife (Immigrating from Canada) and I were married a couple years ago. She changed her name with the license bureau but her passport still says her maiden name. On the list of requirements, it says to bring paperwork for name change. She was never given any paperwork when she changed her name with the license bureau, they just needed to see the marriage certificate. We really don't have any other paperwork for name change. Anyone else have any similar experience/advice?

To legally change her last name in Canada, your wife would have had to have notified federal agencies like CRA, Social Security and the province to update her health card as well as update her passport.

If you wanted her greencard to come in her married name, she would have had to have updated her passport to reflect the married name so the visa that is affixed to the passport matches the passport.  If married name is important, and for the sake of less headache, can you get a new urgent Canadian passport in her married name?  Otherwise, you'll have to file an I-90 once you're in the US to change it  at a cost to you.  The other option is to do what many others do - they just wait until they naturalize to change their name when they file the N-400.

Of possible interest.  OP's spouse got a new passport ahead of the interview.

Thank you for this, very much appreciated. We aren't concerned about the future cost or the names being different for now. Our only concern is that we bring what is required for Friday's interview. From what I read hear, we should be good as the Canadian passport match the name that we filed all immigration paperwork with. Agree?

Yup, as long as the names match, it's good.

Just be forewarned, its $540 for the greencard.  And she'll still have to change the passport.  I'd honestly just put the 3 years in and put that $540 toward the $725 filing fee for the N-400!

$540 is the cost for the greencard, or the cost to change it? Or both? Neither of us are super concerned about the name as long as it satisfies government and allows her to travel.

$540 to file to replace the GC with the married name.

Is there a recent list of all the documents required for the interview? I see one in the FAQ on here but it’s kind of old now, and I have what they tell you to bring, but I was curious if there a recent list of what people are actually bringing? I don’t know want to show up and get caught out for not having some document!
Do I need copies of every document I bring?

My husband went with everything but the kitchen sink - both our birth certs, his divorce decree, the death cert for my first husband; our marriage cert, his son's birth cert. Copy of his military discharge, RCMP check, my taxes/W2s... The immigration officer wound up only asking for and taking four things: his divorce decree, the death cert, our marriage cert, and my taxes. Double checked our address and contact information. That was it. So while I wouldn't say only bring those four things, I also will say that you shouldn't need to stress over it. As the officer told him, if something else were required, or if they wanted more docs, they would have told you before you were DQ'd.
