We are on tornado watch until 5pm :help: had a few bad storms today, not lasting long though :help: not used to these warnings......so do you hear sirens if a tornado is close?

it depends if your county has the sirens.

weather radio.. can't stress it enough. 69.99 at radioshack gets you a good radio with the alarm feature on it (so it goes off when a warning is posted).

yeah it was getting a little scary last night when I was getting ready to take a shower and all of a sudden I heard the sirens going off and my husband started to panic and just told me to put my clothes back on....so we rushed to his mom's in case anything happens we can stay in her basement....but luckily we're OK nothing happened but when I read the news today I learned that there are some people in Tennessee did not get very lucky....

try to remember that by the time you hear the sirens you should not be leaving your house...try to go to the interiormost room on the lowest level and take cover. You do NOT want to be in a car when a tornado hits!

here in Virgina. we just had a thunderstorm, not too bad.. we are under now a torando watch until midnight.

the stright line past us. the wind was strong.

try to remember that by the time you hear the sirens you should not be leaving your house...try to go to the interiormost room on the lowest level and take cover. You do NOT want to be in a car when a tornado hits!

that is the worst place you can be in if a torando hits.. It will toss that car around like a matchbox car.. if you are in a car and you see a torando and you dont think you can escape, try to find a road side ditch and take cover there.

DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT hide iin a overpass. That is bad cause if the torando comes over it it will be like a huge vacum cleaner and you will be suck up or toss about...

best place is what I suggested if your outside is a road side ditch.

if you dont have a basement, go to the middle of the house, maybe like a batcroom without and windows. and take cover in a bathtub.. if you can drag a mattress in with you put it over you to protect you from flying objects..

My sis can't get ahold of our landlord (he's in Fairview Heights and has no power, no phones, nothing because of the tornado that hit there) and she's got a leak in her kids' bedroom. FUN.

And it's supposed to storm again tomorrow :P

To see some pics that aren't making the national news of my area you can go to KSDK coverage <--- this is a video of the store collapse. or you can go to watch an aerial tour at KMOV where they also have pictures and other coverage of the damage. There's some really impressive still pictures on the KMOV pictures of the damage. There are some good viewer photos on there as well.

Saturday night we had a storm blow through (and I mean BLOW) -- that sucker was travelling at 65 miles an hour, not sure how fast the winds were. I guess you guys got it after us. :( Glad to hear all our VJers are safe!

I also humbly reccommend that people have a set of walkie-talkies charged up and ready to go in case of storms -- you can get a weather/storm alert channel on them in case the power goes out.

Glad to hear that everyone is ok. I farther north not far from Chicago and although we did get some storms and were under a watch, it wasn't anything worrisome.

My thoughts are with those who live in the areas that were hit by it though. Having lived through the "Plainfield" tornado in 1990, been there, done that, but they didnt hand out t-shirts, but I do know what it's like.

For those of us that are from here.. we kind of take most of those storms as "ok well it's another one". You buy a weather radio that can wake you up if there's a warning so you can go in the basement and you go on with life. You call every single member of your family after the storm passes to make sure they are ok and then you make the round checking out your property or the property of others that you have been tasked to check. (I had to go check on my best friends house, my dad's office, and my work last night). There's talk like this for 2 days after a big one comes through and then you forget until the next time. It may sound heartless, but it's the way of life here.

Living here I know about that "ok, well it's another one" attitude, but I will never forget one night the year before last when Steve was down on a visit. We were under a tornado warning while I was at work and Steve had to go to the mall to pick up my daughter. While in the parking lot of the mall increased and he spotted 4 funnel clouds. He proceeded to rush to where I worked (was working in a drug store at the time) told every customer he saw that they needed to seek shelter, then came running back to where I was in tears afraid we would all be killed and he wanted us all to be together if that was going to happen. Very sweet but I felt so sorry for him.
