This may well be a stupid question, but after googling I have not found the answer yet. If I am not totally wrong I will need the police certificate during the NVC stage. As I am a German citizen living in Germany it is clear to me that I need the German certificate, but as far as I know I will need a certificate for any place I have lived for more than a year before. Does that include the US? I left the US in 2004, but lived there for more than a year. If the American certificate is needed, where do I get that?

Again thanks so much for the help!

See the bit about police certs on this page - "Note: Present and former residents of the United States do NOT need to submit any U.S. police certificates."

Thanks so much, I suppose my google skills leave something to be desired. It makes sense really, as the US government should have access, but since everything takes forever I wanted to make sure.

US and Pakistan do not require police certs.

Not for US because they do not have a national police cert, and USCIS/DOS can run background checks with DOJ.

Not Pakistan because police certs are unreliable.

Thanks for your reply, hopefully the German police cert will do as I have never been to Pakistan 🙂

Hello! Does Germany require you to provide a letter of authority when requesting for the police cert? As in, do they validate the reason for the cert? If yes, which document did you share?

Thanks in advance.

As far as I know you just go to city hall and ask for one, it costs about 13 Euro. If you have the PIN for you Personalausweis (ID Card) you can order it online.
