Hello all,

We are expat and going to have an interview at U.S. Consulate in Almaty, KZ. After the interview, we have to travel to Shymkent by flight. However, our concern is that the passports, which are our only ID documents here in KZ, will be kept by the consulate. In the worst case that we have to go through the Administrative Processing, which may take weeks (even months) to complete, we definitely miss the flight and suffer some consequences (we have small kids with us). My question is whether by any chance, we can ask the C.O to see how long they will keep our passport? This information is necessary to plan our stay. Moreover, is there any way to travel in KZ without the passport? Maybe by train?

Thanks in advance.

Even if he or she answers that, it would be very unreliable to depend on that. They can’t guarantee when you will receive the passports back.

Thank you very much for your thoughtful reply. May I ask whether there is any possible solution that you can suggest?

What do you mean?

I have no idea. Maybe he replied to the wrong topic.

There are taxis that take you between cities. That would be the only way to travel without an ID. I have never done it but I’ve seen them around

Thank you very much for the suggestion.
