Hi,

I noticed another thread recently mentioned prescriptions and some people who replied were diabetic. Seeing as I didn't want to hijack OP's thread I thought I'd hazard asking you guys for any info that might be helpful :D

My UKC hubby is a type 1 diabetic and we plan on living in New Jersey when we move. Iv'e gotten quotes for health insurance from Blue Cross and other various companies but in the small print it seems to me that he can't be covered for 12 months because he has a pre-existing condition.

If that's the case then I would sooo appreciate any info anyone has of other ways to get his meds? I realise nothing comes free but ya know...every little helps!!

Thanks a lot for ANY advice!

I have diabetes and there was a time for about 2 years that I had to go to the family health clinic here. They were able to get me on a prescription assistance program for some of the medications I needed or they were able to provide me with samples. I was also able to get some of my medications in the generic name which also cut down on the cost.

I am not diabetic but I do have other medical problems.... I was able to get around the no cover for pre-existing conditions by showing my NHS medical card to prove that I had had medical coverage in the UK.... so it was just a continuation of medical coverage and the wait time was removed....

Well, my fiance is also a Brit and Type 1 diabetic. His UK doc is great and is letting him stockpile his stores of insulin and other meds. We figure that we'll tide him over for a while, until we are married. I called my health insurance company and they have promised me that Diabetes is not considered a pre-existing condition and will therfore cover him and his diabetic related expenses (after absurd copays) once we are married.

Its a bit tougher for you guys since you're both moving from there to here. One thing I have heard is that Walmart will provide diabetic meds and supplies with a $4 copay, so that may be an option until you get things sorted out. I don't know all the ins and outs of that, so you could maybe check out their website for more details.

Also, be sure to have his doc write out on letterhead what all of his scrpits and dosages are as that will help the new doc to get started. I', having my guy get a copy of his medical file to bring with him. So much better than starting from scratch.

Continue researching! I know its tough, but if you keep digging you are sure to find something helpful. Good luck!

Check the laws of the State where you are going to live. In Oregon while the medical companies have the pre existing condition rules Oregon requires them to cover diabetics from day one.

My wife is type 2 diabetic so had to go into the Oregon medical pool with cover from Blue Cross/Blue Shield but even though their rules is no pre existing conditions for 6 months her diabetes was covered from day 1.

We also showed them our NHS medical card but the insurance companies in Oregon require previous US cover, so again check what is the practice in your State

We got around the "pre existing "condition thing by contacting the NHS who faxed me a letter stating I was covered by the national Health Service in England...apparantly all the insurance company needed to waive the 12 mths was proof I had previous insurance :) Good Luck
