Its a waste of money, where money could be spent on other things is why. Seriously, what are you spending on bottled water every week? You could save that, get a Brita filter and jug for the frige, you can save money for the downpayment on the house you plan to buy. Why wait til you buy a house? Makes no sense. You'll need money to buy it non?

A Brita jug takes up what, 6 inches of space in your fridge? Say you get the jug, and it costs you $28 initially, $20 for the jug, $8 for the filter. The $8 filter lasts 4 months, the jug lasts pretty much forever. $8 divided by 4 months = about 6 cents per day for water. A case of 24 1/2 liter bottles costs what? 5 bucks on average? That's 20 cents per bottle, and how much do you spend per month? After one month, the jug has more than paid for itself, and you can sock away all the extra money you would have spent on bottles. Simple math really.

You've sold me on the idea. We've been going through about 10 gallons of Crystal Geyser every couple of weeks. The cost factor is not that much, BUT I can see using the Brita filter as not only being more convenient but also saving us the gas of hauling the water back and forth as well to the recycling centers, not to mention the energy used in bottling and transporting the water to the store.

We were just looking at the filters last night at Target and even considered buying one of the large dispensers, but that would have meant we'd be driving to the coin operated water machines regularly.

I hate spending money in bottled water. I remember the first thing I did when I got myself an apartment in Rio, Brazil, was getting a filter. I lived there for 3 years, never had to buy water. One of my best friends still lives there, it's been around 7 years, and she stil hasn't bought a filter. She says she's lazy to do that, but really, she has no car, which means she has to bring her groceries on foot, carrying the water, which means she's too lazy to do that as well so she buys water from a little store right next to her apartment building, which costs double, and she's been doing that for 7 years. What a waste!

Here in PR we drink tap water, it's not the best, but it doesn't taste like chloride, and we've never been sick for drinking it, so we do it. I guess when we move to our own place we'll get a filter, or if the tap water is not drinkable anymore, but we won't be buying bottled water.

Try looking at Consumer's Report - they're pretty thorough with product testing, but I understand were you're coming from...as far as I know, the filters only remove chlorine and sediment. Remember the movie, Erin Brokovich? The substance found in the drinking water was chromium (the harmful kind). I'd be interested in finding out if a filter would be able to remove something like that. Good point, brother.

Here's some info...

Carbon Filters:

...can be used to remove lead, cryptosporidium, volatile organic chemicals (VOCs), pesticides, benzene and more.

Reverse Osmosis Filters:

Reduce levels of lead, herbicides, pesticides, mercury, magnesium, copper, ammonia and more.

One major drawback to reverse osmosis filters is that they waste a great deal of water. They may have to filter two to five gallons of water in order to create one purified gallon.

so, as far as costs go, for any kind of fiitration system, besides upfront cost, you have to replace that filter regularly in order for it to do any good. i wonder what that cost is?

hmmm we are sticking to the coin operated bit for a while.

yes siree. :( fortunately, i think, the water around here is being treated in numerous fashions. plu a number of agencies are watching/testing it. they claim we have the safest water around because of this effort. we have a local resident, whom happens to know erin b, who is like the loacl watchdog. dude knows his stuff. keeps us neighbhors appraised by email. just got one this morning. the most recent measurements are looking good. :D
