Most tap water is fine to drink. People just like to waste money.
have you ever drank LA water..?? :P

I don't feel like I am wasting money either.....

I should maybe invest in a good filter, then I could filter my own water but I like the convenience of the bottled water....

get a brita water filter. i used to use one in germany.

yeah, my mom had one.... might do that one day soon but water bottles are just more convenient right now...
after drinking german water, i can see why beer is so popular over there

buy a few bottles, refill from the brita water filter. i've done that :innocent:

yeah but then I have to refill the bottles :P
You can check the Yellow Pages for "Water Treatment Systems"; there are some which can be installed in-line right where the main enters your home.

sorry, didn't know you were renting rather than paying mortgage.

But you can buy a countertop water-filter (works like faucet-mount, but about the size of a coffeemaker) from TrueValue, Home Depot or Ace.

Why spend all that money though when you can have a filter (either faucet mount or frige pitcher) and its the same dang thing? And a whole lot less waste!

I hate drinking tap water, but the Brita filter does about the same as Pepsi or Coke does on their filtration, so whenever I'm going out, I just pour it from the Brita into a bottle and off I go. The cost is marginal, and the waste is nowhere near what it would be if I only drank bottled water. I drink about 2 to 3 litres of water a day! The Brita filter takes out the cholorine taste and smell, as well as all kinds of other ####### that municipalities add in. And the water here in Morganton is smelly and disgusting. And sometimes its orange! One pitch filter does about 40 gallons of water and costs around $8.99. (the pitchers themselves range in price from $20 for a 6 cup, to $42 for a shelf dispenser that holds 18 cups worth) How much would 40 gallons of bottled water cost you? A (small) faucet mount costs $19 for the divice and $19 for the filter and does about 100 gallons of water. How much does 100 gallons of bottled water cost you? Not to mention all those bottles tossed away as waste!

btw, the "mineral" added to Dasani water is salt. :P

People, people...check it out...

I'm a germophobe and whatnot...and I have a water tester. Most bottled water is nasty! Tap water even with the best filter is almost off the charts! But you know those machines where you put the 5 gallon jugs under? On a scale of 0 - 200 part per million, it's like 20 or summat.

I can't remember the number exactly, but it's something ridiculously low like that. Awesome water. And even awesome ice cubes. You know how ice cubes look frostyish? Ice made from that water is clear.

But it's gotta be a reverse osmosis machine. And truthfully, the ppm vary depending on which machine you use....so get a water tester if you're unsure.

Buy yourself one of those dispensers, and start drinking water from there. 5 gallons is like $1.25.

I'm with you on this one sister LisaD.:thumbs: We got ourselves a colorful (male's way of describing non-plain) dispenser. The only extra effort besides filling up the plastic jug is tipping over just so to fill the dispenser.

But the water is clearer and better tasting. Yes, the ice cubes are great too. I just love drinking this water on a wram California evening.

Another option is a distiller--I can remember visiting a store which sells them about 6 years ago in Calgary.

We have one of those (picked it up at a garage -sale last year actually)... The ####### thats left behind after making our distilled water is pretty nasty actually... But it does make good water... (although it takes about 8 hours to make a gallon...)

I just think it's still a waste, even if you recycle - which is awesome, btw!. Why not eliminate the recycling stage completely, though?

Its a waste of money, where money could be spent on other things is why. Seriously, what are you spending on bottled water every week? You could save that, get a Brita filter and jug for the frige, you can save money for the downpayment on the house you plan to buy. Why wait til you buy a house? Makes no sense. You'll need money to buy it non?

A Brita jug takes up what, 6 inches of space in your fridge? Say you get the jug, and it costs you $28 initially, $20 for the jug, $8 for the filter. The $8 filter lasts 4 months, the jug lasts pretty much forever. $8 divided by 4 months = about 6 cents per day for water. A case of 24 1/2 liter bottles costs what? 5 bucks on average? That's 20 cents per bottle, and how much do you spend per month? After one month, the jug has more than paid for itself, and you can sock away all the extra money you would have spent on bottles. Simple math really.

sure, be all logical about it Reb. :P

but you left out the convinience factor. with these bottles there is no filling; just grab and go.

we buy some bottled water just for those occasions; which is not very often btw.

as noted previously, we buy/refill a 5 gallon water jug at the store's filtered water machine. we are banking on that the machine at the store has a better filtration system than we could afford. Will probably have to take sister LisaD's advice and buy a tester kit doodad to verify that though.

My folks have some filter in their fridge (dunno what kind though). The water there taste funny to me.

we pay 3 bucks for 24 bottles and buy 2 or 3 flats a month... I also usually buy a bigger jug of water that I keep in the fridge....

i know it might sound crazy that we are doing this but it is just more convenient to have the bottles.. don't have to spend time filling bottles etc....

:blink:: i give up :lol:
