I had posted a while back about the frustration sometimes with not being able to work, and other lack of freedoms while waiting etc. It was nice to hear from others and that i'm not alone in feeling that way! I had been planning to go to massage therapy school this fall with the hopes that my status wouldn't be an issue, since i was under the impression that these types of schools differed from typical college in that they are more vocational and follow different guidelines.I figured that worst case,i would need the SSN in order to register and that if so,assuming all goes well and i receive that mid october, that i would start classes in Jan.Well,i found out today that these schools require either permanent residency status or a student visa.Blah!! So now I have to wait until i have the actual green card to start working towards a career.

I'm 23,and don't have any college experience from before moving here so i guess i'm stuck with american minimum wage for a while! That's one of the things i miss about Canada- i browse job ads here and some place offer as little as two dollars an hour! To me that is slave labour,i don't get it.

Anyway just wanted to vent, anybody relate?

I know how you feel ....it seemed like forever until my husband's EAD was approved (we just found out today). They let you in but it's a pain in the a$$ to get permission to work legally. Doesn't sound fair to me.

Good luck.

Sorry to hear about your frustrations. I had a great job in Canada before I moved here, and I was lucky to get a pretty good city government job here also. But I had to take a slight pay cut from my last Canadian job. They argued that with the exchange rate they are giving me the same, well that was three months ago, and the US dollar is on a decline trend. And they make me work three times harder than in Canada. Go figure...

Depends on your skill sets and willingness to work hard. I know of many immigrants making 50 to 60 thousand dollars a year with no education.

In the US, if you want to earn $2/hr then that's a personal choice. I can go right now and flip burgers if I wanted to for more than that, I can be a receptionist at a gym and earn more than that, I can be the janitor of my building and earn more than that. Hell I was a maid at a hotel and earned $12/hr.

But anyway, I guess this is off topic now.

Actually, minimum wage in Alberta's lower than the current going rate for McDonald's. Here we see that a booming economy isn't actually hindered by paying people a decent wage.

I thought the US national minimum wage was $5.65.... how come there are jobs that are only paying $2.00 an hour?

I made way better money in Canada than I will ever be able to make here in the U.S., with the job skills that I currently have. It was just one of the things I had to accept in order to be with my husband.

Federal minimum wage is $5.15, but most states have a higher minimum

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minimum_wage_law#United_States

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._...e_minimum_wages

Jobs that involve tips, such as servers, are allowed rates lower than minimum wage because of the tips.
