Hi,

On my birth certificate, my last name follows that of my moms (Lee). (I was born overseas)

When i became a US citizen at age 19, my dad wanted me to change my last name to follow his (Lam). So when my passport was issued, it has my dad's last name.

I was attending college at the time, and was taking out loans. A school official said that changing your last name would delay the loan process. Therefore I never made the change on my school records. In fact, my credit cards, bank statements, college diploma, W2s, the deed on my house, still has my mom's last name.

I will be filing for the fiance visa in the coming week, and was wondering would this cause a serious red flag? Or am I just being paranoid.

Thanks in advance for your help.

You'll notice the some forms ask for other names used. Disclose it there, then explain it like you did above. Then show include documentation supporting the name change you did at the time you obtained the passport.

You are just going to have to have extra documentation and need to be consistent at using your father's family name on all the immigration paperwork. When any evidence or other documents show the wrong name, attach a note referring to the name documentation.
