Hi, Is anyone else planning on taking their wedding dress to the US or buying it there?

I already have mine (well almost - final fitting in a couple of weeks) I am flying with Delta and have contacted them and they said if there is space in their coat cupboard they can put it in there but if not it can be checked. The bridal shop are going to pack it into a box for me and have said that I will be amazed about how small they can pack it. I would really like to have it as hand luggage but I'm gonna have to wait and see how small the box is and if it will fit in a small suitcase with wheels that I can carry on.

Has anyone have any experience of this or know anyone else who has married abroad?

Thanks

Lindsey

Hi there.

I haven't transported a dress as hand luggage. But I did have my wedding dress packed in a box for preservation purposes with tissue paper etc. I was amazed how small the box was when it came back. I had to open it myself just to make sure everything was in there!!

I would imagine it will be small enough to carry.

I have mine too and am planning on taking it over with me. I didn't actually buy it from a wedding shop though! I got it off of eBay!!!

I was hoping to take it as hand luggage  I think I will have to buy a bag to put it in though.. If I took it to a wedding shop do you think they would pack it for me?

I would have thought so. They may charge a small fee as you didn't buy it at their shop but it'll probably be worth it.

This has been brought up several times, but as I remember, if you connect with the Flight attendants and tell them its your wedding dress. most of them ensure to take very good care of it.

I got my wedding dress vice versa, from US to Europe.

I think my husband brought it with him - it fit nicely to his nomal luggage.

But if you have a really special dress, perhaps the carry on luggage will be best. Maybe just in case call the airline to verify it's ok (I don't think that the dress box will be that big, but for being polite and to have asked it).

We're not doing the whole formal thing, but I would think with exchange rates being the way that they are, you'd be better off traveling to the US and buying the dress there. Otherwise, I'm with John & Annie on this one - let the flight attendants know. Hey, you might even get some free champagne out of the deal ;)

Forget roses and chocolates; when you've found someone who will do government paperwork for you - that's love!

I brought my wedding dress to the US (actually, my mom brought it with them when they came to the wedding), and also took it back to Canada for a couple of receptions we had with my family. Each time we carried it on board and asked to hang it in the front of the plane, where they usually have space for business travelers' garment bags and such. It was not a problem to do that, only to lug it through the airports, it was dang heavy! My mom loved it 'cause she had many opportunities to brag about her daughter's wedding ;) and it was fun having everyone wishing us a happy marriage. :)

Just don't put it in as checked baggage!
