Hi There,

My Fiance is here and is hoping to learn how to drive. She does already have a SS# from when she worked here on a J-1 visa. Is she allowed to take lessons, and apply for a license?

wow, we have already recieved our Biometrics appointments. It is only 2 1/2 weeks away.

It seems to be moving rather quickly.

I think that varies from State to State, but usually you need an EAD or your greencard.

Here in LA I had to bring my EAD card and they wanted to see my wedding certifcate and NOA2...why, I don't know.

You can go to the DMV website of your county and check what they say there, what your wife needs to bring in in order to get her license.

Oh yes, I checked there, went to the DMV and ran into a lot of red tape. They had no idea what I needed in order to get my DL and I had to insist that the EAD was fine. After a long time of debating the lady I talked to disappeared for about 20 mins, then came back with a piece of paper that said I needed to bring the WC and NOA2...I almost believe she typed that up just to let me know that SHE was in control...lol

My hubby was able to get his DL (in Florida) with his NOA from the AOS - because his I-94 was about to expire...

11/2004 - Met in Brazil

09/2006 - Apply for K1

03/2007 - K1 approved

04/2007 - Apply for AOS & EAD

07/2007 - EAD approved

01/2008 - Conditional Residency approved

11/2009 - Apply to remove conditions

02/2010 - Permanent Residency approved

11/2010 - Apply for Citizenship

03/2011 - Citizenship approved

07/2011 - Moved back to Brazil

Some states only need the I-94, SSN and marriage license (among other identification stuff).

When I came here in 2004 rules were not that tough. I had a driving licence in Russia and since it was both in Russian and English they let me use it for 6 months. I learnt to drive much faster though. What helped us is that we got me a state ID as soon as I came so when it was time to apply for driving licence, I just gave them my ID (didn't have any EAD then yet), passed the exam and got a my licence. My whole experience was very painless.

Now I know that you have to have a proof of legal residency. When I got my state ID they were happy with my I-94 and my marriage certificate.
