I would start by trying to get a copy of the ticket. Where did you get it? You can usually obtain a copy of a ticket from the traffic court. Then...if you're guilty of it, pay it! If not...I don't know. You can adjourn, plead not guilty and set a trial date, however, when it does come to trail, you'd have to be there.

Would it have an impact on your American driver's license? I doubt it. However know that outstanding tickets are kept on the computer in Canada (by province...they don't extend out of province), and if you're stopped, for whatever reason at some point in the future with an outstanding ticket (and it could go to warrant status...) you might end up in cells for a night!

Anyway, try and remember the city, jurisdiction, province that you got the ticket in. How much was it? (Bet it was a whopper!)

No but if you WERE speeding the right thing to do is to pay your fine.

IMHO it's like saying just ignore all bills/debts/ outstanding issues when you move to America... it can't follow you to the US..

I also know that when our drivers got speeding tickets in the US when I was in Canada, i could look up the state website, go to their online ticket payment center and look by plate # or ticket number. Not exactly sure if it's the same in Canada as our drivers only got tickets in the US but if you remember where you got it, they should be able to run your plate # and know what tickets are outstanding on it.

I don't believe in speeding tickets. I consider speed limits advisory, not mandatory. :P

Thanks for the replies....the speeding ticket was in Quebec, Canada. Anyone where to look up the ticket or status of the number plate in Canada? Will this ticket show up on records here in US (part of NATO Treaty or something???)

I don't think so. I got a parking ticket in Canada once and never paid. My US record is clean.

Or, the precise reverse--a [b[visiting-only[/b] Canuck licence-holder getting a ticket in the US, and then simply "absconding" to Canada.

Ususally, traffic courts will have a "reminder"--a letter specifying the ticket number, the offence, and a court date--if the fine is not paid within 30 days. So, the OP can either:

  • Call the traffic court in the jurisdiction where the offence occured, and ask for a copy
  • wait for the court notice

and then deal with the matter.

Mark, that's not really a valid comparison. I've gotten (and contested as bogus) parking tickets in DC--and they don't follow me to TN, GA or TX (all of which are still in US).

just found this on google but stupid link didnt work to post so here i copied and pasted what it sais ,

my advise is try to call palais the justice they should have some kinds record and see if they can help you LOna

Tread very lightly in the land of Poutine

If you visit Quebec and receive any kind of traffic fine, including a parking ticket, make sure that you pay it. Since 2005, a rather draconian law has been adopted to deal with offenders. Failure to pay a ticket results in the revocation of driving privileges in Quebec. This applies also to non residents and it doesn't matter when the offense occured. Unlike the rest of North America, there is no statute of limitations in Quebec. "The only way you can ever get removed from our database is to produce a death certificate," says a court official with the Palais de Justice in Longueuil, a suburb of Montreal.

Offenders of the above-mentioned law are liable to a $430 fine and on the spot confiscation of their vehicle. As you might surmise, the penalties pose a major problem for American tourists who may have "forgotten" to pay a parking ticket on a previous visit , perhaps in the heady days of youth.

If such misfortune befalls you, be prepared to come up with a lot of cash on the spot. You might need as much as $1,000 for paying the fine at the local police station and paying the towing company that was hired to carry off your vehicle. You may even be left by the roadside and if you can't speak French, you may not even realize the full import of what has happened to you. In addition you will need your charge card to pay off the original ticket which may have tripled or quadrupled in cost since the date of issue. Most Quebec municipal courts accept charge cards for paying fines. Like in the US, traffic offenses are a provincial jurisdication in Canada. As such, another province, like neighboring Ontario, cannot collect on an outstanding Quebec traffic ticket nor enforce an unpaid fine. The Napoleonic Code does not extend to the rest of Canada.

An unpaid traffic ticket is not grounds for the denial of entry to Quebec and, if you aren't driving, you are not breaking the law. But, according to the Palais de Justice official the vehicle you are riding in could be impounded if your name is on its registration and your driver is stopped. By the way, a DWI conviction anywhere in the United States will result in the denial of entry to Canada. If you try to cover this up and are caught in a police check, you will be automatically jailed and then officially deported.

You said the ticket was in "Quebec, Canada".

Unfortunately, that is somewhat ambiguous; did you mean "Quebec City" or the province of Quebec?

The question isn't trivial. You should know the municipality where it occured so that you can search 411 to get the necessary numbers and call.

It was on one of the freeways in Quebec..so i guess it would be Quebec province.

Saying quebec province is like saying you got a ticket in the state of Texas. Do you know which highway you got it on and where you were driving to? That may narrow down the area.
