Sunday we set off for the beach at Lincoln City, Oregon for three days.

My only previous experience of beach holidays is in the UK and Spain. I now understand why Americans take such little vacation time. 3 days in Lincoln City is about 1.5 days longer than the local entertainment is able to cope with.

There is a casino, there is a beach, there are places to watch the sea. The beach had less people on it than a British beach in mid winter and none of the amenities.

No offense to Oregonians - but I'd bet they don't get much beach combing in Lincoln City (or Oregon for that matter)...although the Oregon/Washington ocean-side is very pretty...

For a real 'American' beach experience, you'll need to head much farther south Lansbury as nothing in Oregon is indicative of Americana...

I'm told Lincoln City is one of the top vacation spots in Oregon.

The family have rented a house there for Thanksgiving week and my son is coming from England to be there. He is in for a culture shock

Haha, ahhh that was funny!

Anyhoo, doesn't it really depend on what your idea of what a 'vacation' is? Sounds to me like you are one of those people who likes a lot of entertainment and I don't mean shell collecting.

Methinks you need to look for a new family vacation spot. I have never been to Oregon and I have never heard of Lincoln City until today, however now that I have done a little research I find that around Thanksgiving they have the:

Salmon, Salmon, & more Salmon at the Pacific Coast Center for Culinary Arts on Nov 17th and if you miss that on Nov 29th you can catch the Festival of Trees at Chinook Winds Casino!

Enjoy!

3 days at a beach in OR and now you know why Americans take such little vacation time? Surely you are being sarcastic as it sounds like you did not enjoy your time in Lincoln City.

Americans take less Vacations because they get less time off from work than most Countries.

There are 1,000s of places to have great vacations at in America. I hope you are able to find one you will enjoy. B)

Go much much much farther to get the real experience of a REAL beach in the Americas. Try Florida or go all out and head south of the border to the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. The Yucatan peninsula has awesome beaches and vacation spots. Cancun, Merida,Xicaret,Tulum, islas mujeres are all incredible. Nice clear crystal warm water with white sand that never gets hot and burns your feet. =0) Best of all there are lots of things to see and do. I dont think there is anything wrong with Americans taking less Vacation that is irrelivent to the crappy beach you got stuck in. It just means we get less time off. Maybe just the spot you went to was not a great vacation place. Trust me any beach in Mexico is way better than the beaches in the UK, and the water is warm not ice cold like it is in Europe! The water is alot cleaner and warmer thats for sure!

Ooooh girl, the Yucatan is great! We went to a resort on the Riviera Maya in 2005 for my brother's destination wedding and lemme tell you...it was amazing. So beautiful.

If anyone's looking for a nice vacation in Mexico, have a look at Bahia Principe. That's where we stayed; the service was outstanding. The only drawback was that some of the main areas were not air-conditioned so stay away in summer. We were there in February and it was pretty damn hot.

Well I see the humor fell on deaf ears.

I enjoy the Oregon coast it is very beautiful and being a photographer as a hobby I can spend hours indulged in that past time. However in the evenings it is also nice to have something to enjoy other than what is to me a complete waste of time and money gambling in the casino. I'd rather spend the money on gas for my Jeep.

Lincoln City is geared to what its trade is a few days at the beach and gambling. Mind you the casino is good for people watching especially the farmer types with their John Deere hats and Levis 2" too long and held up with braces (suspenders).

Next trip Monument Valley to see where all the John Ford westerns were filmed. As to beaches in Florida or Mexico far too commercialised who wants to vacation with crowds of people.

Pick a better vacation spot next time. FWIW I'd rather chew broken glass than spend 3 days on the Yorkshire coast.

I don't know that anybody mentioned the Yorkshire coast? but for what its worth I too would rather chew broken glass than spend 3 days there.
