How/When to marry, dilemma

Hey everyone,

me (Czech) and my partner (US born citizen) were aiming to file for K-1 sometime between this June and July this year, but after reading through a number of threads here, it seems CR-1 will be the sensible choice. We will have been together for a year by the end of July/beginning of August and I already visited them earlier this year on ESTA (stayed 80 days). Reading through the forums here, I'm becoming convinced we should have just winged it and done a round trip to Vegas, lol.

My partner is visiting me in December, so the next idea is to get married then, but here's the one argument for K-1 - making the wait "shorter" by about 5-6 months by  filling the I-129F now instead of getting married in December and filling the I-130 afterwards . Third option is the Utah online marriage thing, I only learnt about it today - is it actually possible to apply for a CR-1 after an online marriage, considering my partner would be connecting from the US and I from Czechia? Evidence wise, my visit to the States earlier this year and my partner's visit to the Czech Republic this December sounds okay enough?

Thanks in advance and I'm sorry if the same questions have been answered elsewhere already, I tried to read through a bunch, but didn't quite find the reassurance.

If you marry online then you still need to meet before you can file.

K1 has many issues. I assume you have read about them.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

Thanks, I see, is there a period of how long we have to stay together after we marry, or can it just be like a one day thing, theoretically?

And yeah, I have, the biggest issue for us would probably be the costs.

For many people the biggest cost is not being able to work for many months.

It could be for one minute, probably a joke there but you just have to show yourself in the same place.

I know, we talked about it and it'd be sustainable, both financially and mentally, for me it's about not being able to drive around by myself and the extra costs of AOS etc.

Gotcha. Thanks again for clearing this out.

Hi, also Czech here (with an approved CR-1 currently waiting for the NVC to approve documents). I just wanted to recommend to do to the CR-1 instead of K1 if you’re still undecided, especially if you want to be with your partner sooner rather than later, the CR1 is a way to go, also significantly less expensive, and you can still visit on ESTA during the wait (I visited twice since we applied for CR1 and stayed both times 80days)

Also, do start “collecting evidence” of your relationship, take pictures, save receipts, letters, save flight tickets as you’ll need to submit proof of relationship.

Let me know if you have any questions or so, I’d be happy to help 😊

Hey! Yeah, we're gonna do the CR-1 route after we get married in December. Also happy to hear you were able to visit on ESTA during the process, that's a relief, hopefully the wait times will be shorter by then too :)

And yeah, I have got a bunch of photos from my trip there earlier this year and I should have the flight tickets somewhere in my email or on my airline account, I'll make sure to make a backup though. What kinda receipts are you talking about, though? Like could it be something as silly as a restaurant receipt?

Thank you and thank you in advance for any help you can give me, I'll probably be asking about every little thing once we start the process!
