I dunno if anyone is lucky enough to have a drive-in theatre near them as we do, but we had a night out, of 2 new movies (Simpsons and live free or die hard) for $19 this weekend for a van load of 5 of us! (They do a brief intermission before flicks and the kids were asleep as soon as the Simpsons were over :P so it was doubly nice)

Leney, were any of those 2 movies any good?? My hubby isnt a Simpson's fan but i like them!! As for the Live Free or Die Hard, ive seen the previous 2 and wanted to see the 3rd one, but wasnt sure whether it would be any good or not! If you had to compare it either one ....what one would it be...the 1st or the 2nd ?? Personally i liked the 1st one better.

Sorry to stray a wee bit off topic for this but - Our family are Simpsons freaks lol So I loved it, was a little shocked by some of the content, but I admit, I had a great time. I am also a Bruce Willis fan, and I really, really liked Die Hard. I am rather easy to please though hehe My brother (he and his fiancee came with us in a separate car) wasn't so happy with the Simpson movie he just wanted a bit more from it, but we all agreed we were happy with Live Free or Die Hard.

Here's a link to find out if you have one near you: http://www.driveintheater.com/index.htm (drive in that is :P)

Where on LI are you? Take the LIRR to Flushing Main St. or Forest Hills - Flushing(best Chinese and Korean food), Jackson Heights, Forest Hills, and Astoria are all fun to walk around and window shop, eat cheap ethnic food(especially Jackson Heights, where I hope G and I will live when he comes here, and there is at least one Filipino restaurant there that I know of), in summer check out the weekly(it seems) Colombian festival in Flushing Meadows and watch the soccer games, Queens Zoo($5), in Forest Hills there is the Midway theatre and close by the Kew Gardens theater, all have bargain matinees... for romance have a picnic in Queens Botanical Gardens(free) and then come visit me down the street :)

Here is a suggestion:

On the 12th of this month, there will be a new moon(no moonlight)

and a the peak of a meteor shower, where you should be able to see a falling star

every minute

about 60 in one hour

enjoy!!!!

that's a lovely idea. you can make it an adventure to find a place in NY where you can actually see the stars.

as folks have mentioned there are tons of free concerts, movies, festivals in NYC especially in the summer time.

for example every first Friday of the month the Brooklyn Museum is free, open late and there are bands, films and galleries to check out. not to mention good people watching. that's tomorrow night! MOMA is free on Friday nights as well i think 5-7pm. then there are all the street festivals, from Harlem to LI.

also check the Village Voice and Time Out NY for free event listings. Central Park, Battery Park and Prospect Park all have free concerts this time of year. top-notch artists and performers come through, so get there early, bring a blanket and enjoy. get an unlimited Metro Card and explore the boroughs, you'll soon find there is TOO much going on and you'll happily retreat to the house with your love to rest and recover (L) !

Like with most others who have replied here...

- biking, hiking, and walking around city parks / state parks / national parks / beaches

- wandering around the local Costcos and Whole Foods, sampling the "free" food ;)

- borrowing books and DVDs from the public library

- spending time with family and pets

- attending some free or low-cost local activities (e.g. county fairs, free outdoor movies, farmers' markets, ... annnnd, there's going to be a police canine competition at a local park this Saturday!)

- grocery-shopping and cooking together (yeah, this can actually be FUN :D )

- board / card games ... though we haven't done these in a while now

- cuddling... and more cuddling... and more... :P

The Costco suggestion is great in theory....but then you get suckered into their great deals, and you end up spending hundreds of dollars!! We have taken a much-needed break from Costco after seeing our last AMEX bill!!

I guess it depends where you live but here in DC some things that we've done are

1) Take the kids for a bike ride on the Potomac as the sun starts to go down

2) Go to the farmer's market every Saturday morning to get fresh food for the week and walk around and enjoy it!

3) Go to a cafe and get a cup of cappuccino and sit on the street with it.

4) Pack a picnic, spend the early afternoon in a museum (all the Smithsonians are free!!!) and then pick a good spot to have our picnic.

5) Go for a scenic drive

6) Put the kids to bed early, sit in our window seat, listen to music and talk

7) Go Swimming!

8) Art projects (i get way more into it than he does)

If we can do it with 2 rugrats under 4 so can you!!!!

We bought the book "off the beaten path" for our state

http://www.amazon.com/Connecticut-Off-Beat...h/dp/0762722657

It has all KINDS of historic/cultural/just plane zany places in your state. It will list if admission fees are required, as well as give you all kinds of "free" ideas ..

We also bought a 50 hikes book for our state.. LOADS of good fun there!!

We love our Saturday adventures, take our dig camera and blog about it to our friends and family afterwards.. we both get such a kick out of keeping our blog up to date, and telling our family what we've been up to!
