Electric vehicles have an efficiency problem

I always wondered how it would work in a rental setting. I used to work in Insurance and OK I am going back a long time when I started but vehicles were categorised and a major factor would be performance. Pretty much any Tesla would outperform even the flashiest sports car of that era. Repairability is another factor, Thatcham did that for the UK. Plus of course location, driver age etc etc.

 

You simply did not get Rental companies using very high performance vehicles.

 

Judging from that article it sounds like they intend to detune the vehicles, which I presume is a software fix, lock the vehicle into Hertz mode.

 

I do not think repair costs will be different GM vs Tesla, the Legacy Manufacturers are moving in the Tesla direction.

 

I watched something recently and this involved a Ford ICE but amazing how much information Ford, and presumably Hertz etc, can collect. I can see that being a cost factor when renting a vehicle. Or insuring one.

What doesn't make sense, especially for a bus, is I would think the failsafe for any bus that lost power (be it EV or ICE), the brakes should revert to fully on, and the parking brake should engage.  I know in my firefighting days, if one of our trucks lost air pressure, the brakes locked up.

Posted this mainly due to the comment made.  It seems clear that governments are clearly moving more toward socialism/central planning which of course is a failure and absolutely insane (remember Einstein's quote).  The Democrats are the worst at it at least in the US, but the GOP is not far behind.

If government holds off and watches how the marketplace responds and avoids interfering with that, prosperity results.  If government decrees how the marketplace should operate, then dysfunction and unhappiness surely follow.

Britain has downgraded its forecasts for the takeup of electric cars over the next seven years as higher financing costs and rising energy prices threaten to cut the incentive for drivers to replace combustion engines.

The latest forecast from the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR), released alongside the chancellor’s autumn statement, said that just 38% of new vehicles sold in the UK in 2027 would be electric, down from the 67% it predicted in March.
