I am confused. In several cities,

 

* cars are driven on salted roads after it snows

 

* cars are driven on beaches

 

Shouldn’t  EVs in these situations be spontaneously combusting?

It has more to do with salt water getting into the battery pack themselves.  Most packs are fairly sealed against things like road salt, but they do have vents as pressures rise and fall within packs with temperature changes both diurnally and while charging.  Now when a battery pack is submerged in salt water, that saltwater can push past the vents and fill the pack which could eventually lead to internal shorting/arcing and a thermal event.  In the end, if you have an EV that has been submerged in any water (even freshwater contains conductive minerals that could be an issue), park it in an open area, and schedule it for a new battery pack replacement.

Global Lithium Shortage Could Severely Impact EV Makers In 2025

 

Establishing new lithium mines could support growing demand, but estimates from Rystad Energy show this would only delay the inevitable. Rystad's Vice President Susan Zou believes that lithium mine supply will increase by 30% and 40% this year and in 2024. However, the lithium supply chain could face shortages from 2028, remarked Zou.

 

"In the next couple of years, though the lithium supply may stay adequate at a world level, regional supply imbalance is still inevitable," said the Vice President. "The global battery supply chain may find lithium in shortfall again approaching the end of this decade when the supply growth might not keep pace with the demand," she added.

 

This may cause problems for automakers. If the above scenario were to happen, Zou notes lithium prices could skyrocket to 2022 highs, making battery production and EVs more expensive. Lithium carbonate prices increased to 600,000 yuan (approx. $82,300) in November 2022 - 12 times more than January 2021 prices.

It is not just the greenies that do not consider consequences.  The Democrats/Left have no clue as to the potential consequences from their policies.  If these folks were engineers, they would all be fired for not deep diving a DFMEA.

The people I know who have them one of the big pluses is that there is little to service or go wrong.

 

This strikes me as having issues particularly for Dealers if they are not making money from their Service Depts.

 

It also makes me wonder how the market will change, the volume of business decreases there will be fewer mechanics and where I am in the boonies far fewer options and few nearby.

 

The issue I see in the US is that the main market is currently high end with lots of toy features. Nobody has really gone for the mass market. Certainly should be possible to design and manufacture a simple EV, not that much more complicated than a washing machine. Perhaps there needs to be an Android type control system?

Good, but the point of the above is that many charging-stations aren't near those or similar places.

I do the same thing, except for the beer of course, and then leave in 5-10 minutes with another 500 miles of range before I need to stop again.

As we do not wear a diaper, my wife and I can’t go 500 miles without a bio break. She drinks 2 liters of H20 a day. I am drinking a six pack of caffeinated fluids every 500 miles. The beer is actually only when I celebrate surviving the latest encounter with an inept driver.

 

Drove a gasoline powered rental one way to Los Angeles 2 weeks ago: 530 miles. Stopped for gas 4 times to use rest rooms. Only once to fill up (on the AZ side of the state line to save on gas, given the gas in Blythe is apparently fortified with gold dust) and the other 3 times just a gallon so that I qualified as a  customer for rest room access.

 

Driving an ICE car saved me exactly zero minutes versus driving a Tesla.

They are actually.

 

In the article it was after 10pm and the public rest room at shopping mall colocated with the fast charger was closed. Plausible, but

 

* with proper advance planning, this is avoidable, since most fast chargers for Interstate highway routings are co located with gas stations.

 

* most people do not do road trips after 10pm

 

* if I am still on the road after 10 pm, it won’t be to gas up or charge up. It will be to head to a place with a bed to sleep in, such as a hotel or my home.

 

Consider that Elon Musk might not be the moron the far right and far left makes him out to be. When they can figure out to land a rocket on a barge in middle of the ocean, then they just might have the standing to critique where he places his EV chargers.
