I think there were service Petrol Stations when I was a child but they had gone by the time I started driving.

I think there was a time when you get get both leaded and unleaded and then additives you could put into unleaded and also ways engines could be modified, all a long time ago.

And now it is ethanol, I can buy non ethanol for small engines.

Getting back on topic a bit, I thought this was interesting.  I expect this is related to the recent fire in South Korea, but in that case the car was reported to not be actively charging.  Personally, I would never park an EV inside a structure.  I know EV fires are rare, and less common than ICE car fires, but I know from experience, I can control and contain an ICE car fire with a garden hose, not so with an EV.

State Farm Removes All EV Chargers From Its Garages Over Fire Concerns

Insurance giant State Farm has decided to pull EV charging stationsfrom its parking decks nationwide, citing fire safety concerns as the primary reason. The Illinois-based company, known for insuring just about everything under the sun, is now exploring alternative charging options for its EV-driving employees and promises to make further announcements once it has a plan. It’s an odd stance from a company that’s built on managing risk, but perhaps this risk was just too hot to handle.

This story speaks volumes.  It also bodes poorly for people who must park an EV outside in the weather, such as Illinois winters.  Oof.

Fire at Missouri lithium-ion battery recycling plant causes evacuations

MADISON COUNTY, Mo. — A fire at the Critical Mineral Recovery battery recycling plant in Fredericktown has caused residents to evacuate, Wednesday. Several area fire departments are working to battle the blaze.

Madison County 911 dispatch received the call around 2 p.m. Wednesday, according to Kyle Rogers, 911 direction. The Department of Public Safety's Division of Fire Safety and several tanker strike teams also are responding to fire.

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office has urged everyone north and northwest of Village Creek Road and Madison 217 to evacuate immediately. The 225,000-square-foot processing plant is located in the 800 block of Highway OO.
Critical Mineral Recovery is one of the largest lithium-ion battery processing facilities in the world, according to company's website. The plant has the capacity to process more than 60,000 tons of electric vehicle and consumer-grade lithium-ion batteries.

Found this in another story related to this fire.  Hmm, apparently this failed, so they may want to go back to the drawing board or get their lawyers working on a lawsuit against whoever sold this system to them.

The fire erupted in spite of what the company’s website calls “likely the most sophisticated automated and remote supervised and controlled fire suppression systems in the world.”

“The state-of-the-art fire prevention system is designed to detect fires before they start,” the company’s site says. “The system covers all areas where battery materials are stored or processed. It is monitored remotely 24/7 employing high-intensity industrial forward looking infrared…camera technology.”

This is sort of interesting, UK view but basically a load of EVs are being registered and sold as used so they can meet Government requirements and not get fined.

Makes you wonder how many are put there?

Slack EV sales were among the key reasons cited last week by Volkswagen – Europe’s number one carmaker and Germany’s biggest employer – for its decision to embark on a brutal cost-cutting drive.

For the first time in the 87 years since it was founded under the Nazis to produce an affordable “people’s car”, VW intends to close at least three factories in its home country and axe tens of thousands of jobs. Union leaders have threatened a “hot winter” of strikes from December.

Toyota USA Chief:  Hey, About Those IMPOSSIBLE EV Mandates...

California's electric vehicle mandates, which go into effect next year, are "impossible" to meet and will result in reduced choices on dealer lots.

"I have not seen a forecast by anyone," Jack Hollis, chief operating officer of Toyota Motor North America, said on a Friday roundtable discussion, "government or private, anywhere that has told us that that number is achievable.  At this point, it looks impossible."

Hollis continued, "Demand isn't there.  It's going to limit a customer's choice of the vehicles they want."

That's thanks to California's Advanced Clean Cars II (ACC II), adopted by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) in 2022.  CARB consists of 12 lackeys appointed by Gov. Gavin Newsom, two more members appointed by the state legislature's environmental justice committees, and two non-voting members providing "legislative oversight" for the Assembly and State Senate.  [...]
