An oft-touted advantage of owning an electric vehicle is one-pedal driving, when drivers can slow down a vehicle simply by lifting off the throttle.

But as more Americans swap their gas-powered cars and trucks for an EV, some are also realizing there are drawbacks to the one-pedal lifestyle.

 
"It can cause some people to get sick," John Voelcker, a former editor of Green Car Reports and a contributing editor at Car and Driver, told ABC News.  "Strong regenerative braking, which recaptures max energy, can cause motion sickness.  There is a learning curve to lifting off the accelerator in an EV ... you have to modulate it."  [...]

I know a lot of folks that get sick in ICE vehicles as well.  Honestly, I was driving on a test trip going down from a pass with a lot of switchbacks using just the transmission low gears to regulate the speed, and the test engineer in the back blew chunks when we finally stopped.  We laughed a lot.

 

That being said, the one pedal driving is a bit funky to get used to, but it does help save the brake pads when stopping a very heavy vehicle.  Also, it can be shut off at least in the EVs I drove.

You might ask, maybe Hertz was charging Lee for having to top the Model 3's battery upon its return? According to the final receipt, the customer gave the Model 3 back to Hertz with the battery 96% full, the exact same state of charge it was picked up with. And, even if Lee hadn't done that, the maximum fee should've been $35, per Hertz's EV recharging policy: "You can return your EV at any charge level and we’ll recharge it for $35—or just $25 for Gold Plus Rewards Members. Or, return it at the same level as pick-up and pay $0."

Electric car buyers should be aware of the "astronomical" costs required to regularly replace short-lived tyres, owners have warned.

 

Car lover Jim Bassett managed just 7,500 miles in his brand new Volkswagen ID.3 before being quoted more than £300 to replace the rear rubber.

I had to go over the pass this morning and the snow ice combination made things skittish and will need a new set before next winter, now they have 60,000 on them. Now they are legal and fine otherwise.

I don’t disagree, but it is interesting how the company responds (see below) in a hypocritical fashion.  Maybe the company should say if you want better tyre life, don’t buy an EV.
 

One of the big marketing strategies behind EV’s is they are fun to drive with instant torque, with 0-60 times regularly emphasized, low CoGs so cornering is great, etc.  I remember @Mike E telling us this was the main reason he bought his Tesla which is just fine.  The problem is that this marketing works for the early adopters, but as the vehicles go more mainstream, people will be surprised by how poor the tyre life is on EVs simply due to the massive weight increases of the vehicle, and not just because they are launching themselves from a stop sign or red light or trying to take a corner at 50.  We also need to remember that the tyre wear directly translates into emissions of particulates and VOCs.

 

A spokesman said: “Tyre longevity is influenced by a wide range of factors, most importantly the way in which the vehicle is driven, for example, hard cornering, braking and acceleration can cause more wear than gentle driving.”

I do remember when I came over trying to find somewhere that sold tyres with no joy.

 

Anyway just for amusement sake I looked up the options in the UK for my car and the price seemed similar but a lot more options. Now I look for all season good in snow tires and obviously the latter is not relevant in the UK. So seems a lot more options in the UK but they do not do mileage guarantees or tire hazard protection, I get mine from Costco. Also they obviously sell EV  and Hybrid tires.
