Why Repairing Your EV Is So Expensive

 

When Scott MacFiggen’s neighbor backed into his Rivian R1T pickup truck last summer, the vehicle was left with a dent the size of a bowling ball under a rear taillamp.

 

 

MacFiggen was expecting a couple-thousand-dollar bill from the repair shop and to be without his truck for a couple of weeks. “I guess I was a little naive,” said the 51-year-old San Francisco resident. The actual bill came to $22,000, and the vehicle took 2½ months to fix.

 

For EVs, repairs following a collision can cost thousands of dollars more than their gas-powered counterparts, because the fixes tend to require more replacement parts, the vehicles are more complicated and fewer people do such repairs. While those issues may ease over time, first-time electric owners may be startled by the higher costs and longer wait times.

I know someone who has a Rivian, signed up the day they became available. So far so good. He uses it as a light work truck, has a big Diesel for the heavy stuff.

 

There are quite a few around here.

 

I am sure he told me that they were losing a bundle on each vehicle they made, well back then, now someone repairing them is not going to lose money.

 

And I am not sure of the structure, that may well complicate matters.

 

A neighbour hit a Elk a few weeks back, not sure how old his truck is but he does not have the money to pay for a Garage repairs and has been buying parts off EBay. An older truck with easier and cheaper repairs. I forget the number now bit someone I know who had a new truck had to replace a rear light assembly, all in one piece and that was how much?

My friend in Scottsdale had a side light stolen off her older Olds Aurora in a parking lot.  Apparently some folks look for parts for their own vehicle or for resale online this way.

But Aatish Patel, president of charger manufacturer XCharge North America, is worried the delays in installing chargers are imperiling efforts to drive up EV adoption.

“As an EV driver, a charger being installed in two years isn’t really going to help me out now,” Patel said. “We’re in dire need of chargers here.”

Hmm, so they get this based on government regulation, but it is government regulation that is causing the delay?

A Tesla owner says he got a $14,000 repair bill one day after buying a Model Y.  A new report suggests it's part of a much bigger problem.

 

Former Tesla owner Shreyansh Jain was hit with a $14,000 repair bill from an issue he encountered less than 24 hours after taking his brand new Model Yhome, according to a recent report.

Jain told Reuters part of his EV's suspension broke when he was driving with his family the day after he'd received delivery of the Model Y.  The car had 115 miles on its odometer when the suspension issue caused [...]

I can talk to the insurance aspect, the Insurer would have sent an Adjuster for that amount, I seriously can not see them paying it it was a manufacturing defect
