So President Trump thinks Canada should be the 51st state.  OK, but would we have to take Quebec too?

Reminds me of back when I was a young college geology student way up north.  Our Canadian geology professors told us that when Canada was preparing for a new flag one group wanted the flag to depict 9 beavers peeing on a frog.

My apologies in advance to all my Canadian friends here.

I did get to make trips back then to Sudbury and Elliot Lake for it's geological riches.  What wonderful places 😆☣️

And my wife loved Quebec City when we visited there.

Well, next month, if he manages to make it. 🤣

Our sixth anniversary today; picked up my parents at the airport two days after PRG got here, spent a few minutes at my place, then drove like a madman to get to county clerk's office on time due to crazy traffic.

Keep hoping, and basically the next time were both employed and can reasonably schedule something, at the very worst PRG and mini-Dave will go visit PRG's family.

But so far we've had plans derailed by

1) covid and new baby

2) Putin invaded Ukraine

3) me out of work

4) PRG out of work and misc stuff in Russia

5) me out of work again

... of which only the new baby was intended (and really didn't expect to get him that quickly).

And she'd need to go to DC and do some paperwork at the embassy to go to Russia again (never registered our marriage and name change in Russia).

Don't let her Russian internal passport lapse.  My wife's internal and international passports expired several years ago and we were never able to renew them even after many attempts and several $ through the embassy in DC.  Wife just gave up trying.  They renewed her international passport a few years after she arrived (5 year renewal back then) and 5 years later just after both passports expired they told her they could not determine that she was a Russian citizen.  Also told her she could not enter Russia on her expired passport.  We tried and tried.  By then wife had her US passport and didn't really care abut returning to Russia.  The one concern now is that her mother is getting older and if something happens...

My wife's US passport lists her place of birth as Kyrgyzstan (where she was born, as the Soviet Republic), not USSR or Russia.  I told my wife it would be interesting to apply for a visa to Russia and see if it sneaks through.

I said the other week to my husband - "hey I wonder if they'll hit me up for jury duty again this year" (at this point it's nearly yearly which isn't supposed to happen but whatever..) and what arrives in the mail - his very first jury duty. He is weirdly excited lol. I've tried to explain it to him as best I can. I cannot wait for the judge to be confused at the accent. 😄

Apparently, you actually can't get out of it in this town. You can postpone it or delay it but you have to then show up at a new time and place. Like one time I called up and told them that I was responsible for caring for my parents and that I live out in the middle of nowhere and didn't have transportation. The woman got all snarky and told me to hire a cab or walk.

When I showed up at the courthouse I remember one person that was in a wheelchair, neckbrace, and a leg cast and still couldn't get out of it!

When I showed up at the courthouse I remember one person that was in a wheelchair, neckbrace, and a leg cast and still couldn't get out of it!

sounds familiar.  i've had similar issues with my local courthouse - they don't even like the fact that i'm supporting us military exercises sometimes.

Pretty much the same here.  You get a notice that indicates that you are scheduled for the following week.  Call in each night to see if you need to report the next day.  I told them I had several full weeks worth of patients and how can I wait until the last minute to know if I need to report and what am I going to do about my patients, some of them in pain.  They just said sorry, you have to do it.  After more discussion they allowed me to pick the day to report.  I always pick Fridays since the attorneys and judges want to get out early those days.

I cannot wait for the judge to be confused at the accent. 😄

I follow a page on Insta called the Englishman in Texas.  Very recently, he did a post about the single thing he is unable to order in Texas due to his accent. That item: water.  A simple glass of water.  I showed it to DH because well, he's a Brit and he just nodded along in agreement.

I don't find too many issues with pronunciation but every once in a while, he'll throw me off with a wobbly.  Pretty rare, though!

Now, hub's former flatmate who is now an Englishman in the NL - he can get rambling along and leave a "what the deuce" look on one's face.  That mix of Manchester accent with the Dutch accent and maybe a few marbles can certainly leave you shaking your head.  I had less issue with a colleague from Glasgow who'd slip off into brogue on occasion!
