Crazy...5 years ago, we were in Calgary, waiting for our passports to be returned from the Consulate.  We'd had our interview on the 9th, got home from Montreal after flight delays in the wee hours of the 10th, had school cancelled and the Consulate closed indefinitely, cancelling all other scheduled interviews on the 12th.  We were so lucky because they'd issued our temp I-551's and had shipped them by courier on the 11th.

Hubs flew up to us on Friday the 12th, with the intention of using airline status to take three 70lb bags back to Houston on the Monday to lessen the moving load.  We pivoted, opting for him to stay with us because we were afraid if he left, he wouldn't be able to make it back to help me load the trailer and travel home.  It ended up being the right call as everything came to a screeching halt.  Our poor cats were alone for 21 days.  Thank goodness our chosen family stepped up and made the trek twice a day to feed them.

Still strange to think this is the week the world stopped, 5 years ago.

Still remember having to route my wife home as she was in Russia at this time five years ago.  Normally we would fly through Beijing, or Incheon, but in this case her only option was via Moscow and Washington DC.  When I went to Detroit Metro Airport to pick her up eventually, it was like a ghost town.

Wow, that was one heck of a ride. I still can't believe it was 5 yrs ago.

Sadly many parts of Canada it is still not anywhere near normal yet.

It is not just Canada.  I still see folks wearing masks at work, driving alone in cars, out hiking, etc.  I always laugh a little inside when I see it.  The work one to me is the most egregious, if you feel sick enough to wear a mask, do not go into the office!

For people that work with the public that are constantly coming in sick and not wearing masks and need care, and with employees that also show up to work sick - how should other employees that are immunocompromised and care for immunocompromised individuals in their homes take precautions? There is a reason why my family masks whether it be at work or elsewhere, and this has kept us safe. I know what has happened to those of my family that haven't taken precautions, and none of it is good. I know that you don't mean harm by finding it amusing, but it is a personal choice and I don't think we should be mocking that. I can't get people to care about the health of those I love, so we have to do what we have to do. I was just in a hospital facility with my dad yesterday - all masked and thankfully the employees were too, and I tend to put my mask on early as I'm leaving the house to ensure a good sealed fit and so that I don't forget it... so yes sometimes it's on in the car. 😉

So you assume everyone masking today is doing it for the reasons you stated, and I assume it is because they are sick themselves.  Maybe we are both wrong, who knows.  Regardless, I don’t judge, I suppose a little internal laughing is judgy a bit, but if they are masking for the reasons you stated, why didn’t we see that prior to Covid?

I don't assume anything. Mostly I let people get on with their business and their personal choices to wear one or not and people seem to reciprocate. Stateside I've found most people are okay, a few people that make a snide comment in the course of five years, and one person that tried to run me over and then said some pretty hostile things to my husband. In the UK though, I felt physically unsafe and was actually spat on! Everyone I've talked to in both countries wear a mask for the same reasons I do. We'd just like to go about our business, safely, because we still see people endlessly coughing up a lung and wheezing in the grocery store and we're still getting employees being pressured to come into work with high fevers and coughs while dealing with sick and elderly public. In medical settings we've always seen times when masking was needed. It's a shame people never tended to think about it in other situations, but it's been helpful for me and my family. My health would have been a lot better if people had thought of it in the past, but I'm unwilling to now compromise against a disease that causes long-lasting multi-system damage - especially being high risk. People have always worked while sick and that is how I spent a good majority of childhood being sick from what was carelessly brought home to me.

When I wheeled my dad into his appointment the other week, another patient asked if she should mask. We said we didn't mind and it was her choice. She said she had been infected six times and now has a myriad of issues related to those infections. It's a shame she hasn't figured out a way to reduce being infected.

Calgary was a ghost town.  I remember driving down Macleod Trail on a Tuesday, which normally would have been packed with commuting travelers headed into the center of downtown, and it felt like the wee hours of a Sunday.

We came across the border, on April Fools, no less, Uhaul in tow, to activate our visas.  The land agents were "just like normal" and it seemed like a regular day.  We had 3 hotel stays on our journey back and it was certainly a mixed bag about what was open, what wasn't and what the covid rules were.  We were just so happy to finally get home because we'd been away for 18 months, waiting for the process to play out.

I do chuckle about solo travelers in masks in their cars.  I don't think twice about it anymore in public places when people are masked.  And, well, this week I have stayed away from the office because I am sick.  Sharing isn't always caring!

Before Covid putting on my mask was the last thing I did prior to working on my dental patients.  Now the mask is on pretty much nonstop the whole day.  I do have a very good immune system, but with such direct contact with so many people it just makes sense.  I don't like getting sick.  I do understand the reasons people need or want to continue to wear masks and it's fine with me.  Fortunately for us we have primarily a retirement aged patient base and they are very considerate.  They don't hesitate to call if they are starting to feel sick or are running a fever, and we appreciate that.

So you assume everyone masking today is doing it for the reasons you stated, and I assume it is because they are sick themselves.  Maybe we are both wrong, who knows.  Regardless, I don’t judge, I suppose a little internal laughing is judgy a bit, but if they are masking for the reasons you stated, why didn’t we see that prior to Covid?

i equate someone wearing a mask to conceal carry:  it's a personal choice, it's their right, and it's not my business.

Dave has a little one, which is not so little now.

Have been to or invited to many fifth birthday parties of his preschool classmates, his is next month, where has the time gone, man?

Got into year-round-school (which was what we wanted), so starts kindergarten in July (don't know which track so not sure if start or end of July).

Lost my job last month, sigh, man. Nothing new yet.

PRG lost hers again (had let her go and brought her back) at end of December. Gave up on IT, she's studying to be a dental assistant now.

Which means yet again attempts to meet with mama-PRG and sister-PRG not happening this year.
