SSN day#53 and still "just wait"

Does anyone know how long it takes for the SSA to do an electronic verification of a GC holder's status?

Shouldn't take any longer or shorter amount of time than any other SSN application that needs immigration verification. Except for F-1, M-1 and J-1 status they are all handled the same.

The SSA office is supposed to follow up on the secondary request if no response is received in 15 working days and 20 working days for a response from the G-845, so you are talking maybe two months or more for the application to be processed if the G-845 is sent.

If your status does not verify through the initial SAVE request be sure that the secondary request has been made and return to the SSA office no more than once a week to see if the SSA office has received a response from the secondary verification request. If the secondary response is that they need to see copies of your documents, the copies will be mailed along with form G-845.

If the G-845 is sent wait two weeks and start checking once a week for a response. Be sure to take your document whenever going into the SSA office.

When I searched the forum for some sound advice and intelligent answers related with social security, yours is one of those my wife and I appreciate most. Thank you for your valued time & kindness in trying to help us with our SS concern. We do hope you don't retreat permanently out of VJ. It would be a big loss.

an update on our situation-

husband called last night and the guy he spoke to was less than helpful and just overall frustrated and kept repeating "i don't understand" before summarily hanging up on my husband. coincidentally at 4pm on friday. hence, office now closed....

made an infopass appointment to request for USCIS to reenter his info (per previous advice) but next one was 8/20.

but guess what came monday- SSN!!!!

though, shocker, clearly only reflects the EAD and NOT the now-in-hand green card, which SSN was aware of. so we have to get a new card issued that doesn't say "for work reasons only". regardless- the SSN is his.

overall, 71days from time of filing for SSN at SSN office to arrival of SSN.

fyi- have seen posts re: is it delivered to a mailbox without the petitioners name on it. ours was.

glad to hear that most people don't have to wait as long. as if immigration status isn't stress-provoking enough. thanks for all the advice/info

Just an update, the electronic verification cleared several days ago and I received the SS receipt in the mail stating that I applied for the SSC etc.

I called up the local office to re-confirm it too, so I am to expect the SSC minus the legend.

I'm not sure what the USCIS can do about getting you a social security number, so an infopass for that purpose is basically a waste of your time.

The SSA can verify your immigration status on their own - but you may not be in the system yet. It depends on when you entered the US.

You may also not be eligible for an SSN until you receive work authorization. Would be handy to know what visa type you entered on.

Without knowing more specifics about your situation, its tough to help.

My EAD was authorized July 23rd and I got it in the mail August 2nd. I went to the SSN Office the same day to apply for SSN Card. The lady did the electronic verification and told me it hadn't been put in the system yet. She explained to me that they do not put the EAD information in the system at the same time they produce your EAD card and so there is often a delay...

She also told me they were still working on verifying and sending out the SSN cards for those who applied in July (with their EAD)...

From my understanding, the verification itself doesn't take long at all... BUT the time between which EAD is sent out to applicant and time they enter the info in the system... is what is long apparently....

I was kinda joking with the lady telling her perhaps if they would enter the info at the same time they produce the card, they would save up time and such... she laughed and said that no... it is not how they work...

Hope card will come soon...

PS. Perhaps an INFOPASS appointment can be helpful to make USCIS put info in the system faster...dunno...

- May 27th, 2006: Wedding

- May 4th, 2007: AOS, EAD, AP mailed to USCIS

- May 15th, 2007: Notification of Receipt received for all applications

- May 20ish, 2007: Receive appointment notice for biometrics

- May 31st, 2007: Biometrics appointment

- July 23rd, 2007: EAD and AP approved and sent

- July 28th, 2007: Received Advance Parole one week (day for day) before my brother's wedding

- August 2nd, 2007: Received EAD and applied the same day for SSN Card

- August 24th, 2007: AOS still pending, no updates...

Still waiting for SSN Card !
