SSN day#53 and still "just wait"

our SSN has become a nightmare. today is day #53 from when my husband originally applied. just got off phone with SSN person who keeps telling us that there's nothing more she can do, we have to wait.

our SSN timeline:

june 4th- applied with EAD in hand. given standard "may take up to 3wks" paper with reference number

june 25th (day #22)- husband to office. "nothing to do. nothing wrong. just wait."

july 2nd (day #29)- i call. "nothing to do. nothing wrong. can take up to 45days for first ever SSN. just wait."

july 11 (day #38)- AOS approved! officer surprised still no SSN. advises us to call and inform them of husband's legal status. which we do while waiting for passport with stamp.

july 20 (day #47)- went to SSN office with passport, SSN reference number for appointment. told DHS hasn't verified/cleared his number. she copies stamp in his passport. says someone with more authority will be back next week and will help figure out problem. at this point, nothing more to do. just wait.

july 26 (day #53)- learn that apparently there is no one who talks with DHS to figure out where problems lie. again, nobody understands why taking so long but "it can take months", no he doesn't need to fill out a new application. no there's nothing more you can do right now. just wait. no, they can't tell me at what time we change from "just wait" to "there's a problem/clerical error."

nobody else has seemed to have to wait this long. or have they? talk about frustrating.

We went to the Social Security office today with my husbands shiny new EAD card to apply for his SSN, and he had everything in order, a messaged flashed up on the screen that said about fraud, our heart stopped - she said it was just nothing they had to send it off to the main office for confirmation, and they would get back to us in 3 weeks. :(

the woman i spoke to earlier this morning actually called me back (wow!) after speaking to some manager she couldn't connect me with. she told me that immigrations had requested a better copy of both sides of my husband's EAD. she assured me this was done already and that no, my husband did not have to go to the office and that at this point, things should be sorted out in a couple weeks.

the question this raises in me is whether this is new information since last friday OR whether this happened prior to last friday and the woman we met with last friday somehow completely missed this or deemed it as not worthy of us knowing. today's woman couldn't give me dates.

if only they would realize they could get rid of us if they just gave my now legal US resident of a husband his friggin' SSN!

When you first went into the SSA office did they say they couldn't verify your information in the system? Have they actually tried again to verify electronically again or are they just waiting for the first manual verification to come back from DHS?

I have the same problem. I'm still waiting... (38 days)

But my patience explode today and I did a Infopass because obviously the problem is not with the Social Security Administration... the problem is with the S.A.V.E. System (100% in control of USCIS). So I went to Immigration and the operator understand my problem perfectly and she made a "status verification request" that take 5 days.

She explain me that the status verification is a double check to put my information in the S.A.V.E system and she told me that my problem must be fixed in 5 days so I need to contact again the SS Office and say them to try again to clear my documents next week to see if I finally appear in the S.A.V.E. System.

Try that (and Infopass and explain your situation).

The girl made a fotocopy of the SSN application letter, my EAD and a she filled a new form to request the "status verification"

I think is the best move to do right now. I hope you can solve your problem too.

One thing seems apparent in this thread, that being that filing for the SSN during or after AOS/WP seems to create delays. My fiancee and I are hoping to get her SSN application in soon after her arrival (likely after the wedding). Anyone hear of horror stories doing it that way? I'm sure they're out there.

There are a few VJers who have waited an age for a SSN. I myself waited nearly 7 weeks, despite applying after the two week arrival window. If I recall there are a few here who have waited even longer than I, although whether they had AOS I am unsure about.

Usually, what causes delays is that sometimes the SSA has to send a query to USCIS verifying the information presented by you. Now USCIS can then take up to 6 weeks to reply to the SSA. Then the SSA has to process your application, which can take another three weeks or so. Even within those times you can be looking at an 9 week wait.

In your case it seems like there is at least some form of communication going back and forth between USCIS and the SSA (albeit rather slowly), so hopefully you'll hear something soon. :)

My husband has been waiting for a month...argh! And both times we went in, the woman said that his USCIS verification came through without problems. I attacked the mailman today and he said he hasn't seen anything although SSA swears that it was sent out. I'm just hoping that the mail is slow!

Hi everyone,

I have the same predicament, It's been three weeks after I filed for my SS and yesterday I called my local SSA office and I was told that my name is already in the system but they need more time to verify my EAD and could take 3 mos the most. I nearly pass-out because I have a couple of job interviews lined up this week and one job offer that is asking for my SS number. I don't know what else to do to expedite immediate release of my card. This is so stressful but I have to share my experience with you guys and pout a little!

cheers!

I went to the Social Sec office yesterday and requested for an unrestricted card, using my GC. I was given a memo w/ a reference number & contact number and was told that they will do an electronic verification w/ USCIS, since the A-file they said is still under my maiden name when she looked it up in the system & the GC was issued recently she noted that--I then showed her a photocopy of my SSC they issued with my married name on it, she looked worried for a second then printed out the memo. It could take 4 weeks from the memo, but the SS agent said it usually doesn't take that long (nothing's new **sigh**). If the verification clears, they will send a new SSC without the legend on it. I will definitely go back to the office.

Has anyone tried to get an unrestricted SS card with a GC recently? I'll sure update here from time to time.
