Can an application into a US University affect a US immigrant visa in process?

Hello,

I have an application for a family-based immigrant visa filed since 2013. I have been documentarily completed since August 2020 and yet still haven't gotten an interview date.

I have always had plans to study in the US, so the question is, does an application into a US university for a non-immigrant Visa affect my still pending immigrant visa interview???

I don't think applying for a student visa will affect your pending application, but your pending application could certainly impact getting an approved student visa.

What visa category and country is your immigrant visa? Just wondering if you may be close to getting it so may not need to bother with the F1, or if you’re still a long way off.

It is an F1 (unmarried child of a US citizen), and the country is Nigeria.

2013, documentarily completed in 2020.

What is your exact PD? It’s current and probably has been for quite some time so I’m confused as to why you haven’t had an IL yet if you’ve been DQ’ed since 2020.

It would be helpful if you filled in your timeline so that when you ask questions people can see the info they need to help.

OP is going to interview in Nigeria. They have a big backlog (even for USC spousal cases). I believe the time from DQ to IL for Nigeria and IR1 is over one year right now...

ETA: @Akin01 you can try for a student visa but make sure it is a good, reputable school - don't apply to an English language school. You might be able to come over on the student visa. Alternatively, apply to school in another country with a shorter waiting period and transfer your case there.

Yes, exactly. If his PD is 2013 then it became current in 2020 (ish) and so that's a 3 year (ish) wait for an IL, I've not heard of any longer than 2 years. If I were the OP (and his PD is definitely correct) I'd be kicking up a fuss by now.

PD is June 2013, DQ'ed; August 2020. Awaiting interview.

And have you contacted the Embassy to ask what the hold up is? You should have had your IL by now. What does your CEAC status check say?

It is Nigeria. They are backlogged…

And that may well be it, but I've not seen anybody else with a 3 year wait, even for Nigeria. Hopefully the OP is already on the case, has chased it up and is checking their online status, but it's worth flagging to him just in case he's had a IL that has gone in to his junk mail and been missed.
