My understanding is you cannot mail the application for a new passport.

Apply in Person

Apply in person using Form DS-11 if you respond "Yes" to at least one of the following statements:

  • I am applying for my first U.S. passport.
  • I am applying with my child who is under age 16.
  • My previous U.S. passport was issued when I was under age 16.
  • My previous U.S. passport was lost, stolen, or damaged.
  • My previous U.S. passport was issued more than 15 years ago.

Anyone know what to do when all the clerk offices and USPS and libraries are booked months in advanced??

in houston tx and cannot find an appointment

It is a real problem up here in Dallas, too.  Options:

1.  Supposedly, Ellis County passport office allows only walk-ins.  That might be a lengthy drive.  I have no personal experience with them: Passport-Info-Sheet---English (ellis.tx.us)

2.  If you are within a week or so of travel, you can try contacting a Senator's office.  They can help secure a same day passport appointment.

I was lucky.  I started searching several weeks before wife's oath ceremony.  I found one open appointment at a Dallas county office a week after the oath.  It took 6 weeks from submitting the app to delivery....expedited and overnight delivery services.

Good luck!  This is the last obstacle.

In summary, it took 13 months for approval of the CR-1.  It took 44 months for approval of the I-751.  It took 4 months for approval of the N-400.   It took 172 days from N-400 application to Oath Ceremony.   It took 6 weeks for Passport, then 7 additional weeks for return of wife's Naturalization Certificate..

How soon do you need it?

If not soon, you have to go to post office website, put zip code for outside cities eg Spring, Katy, Sealy and choose dates further out.

They're your best bet. Just helped someone out with this. So, it's fresh.

Immigration journey is not: fast, for the faint at heart, easy, cheap, for the impatient nor right away. If more than 50% of this applies to you, best get off the bus.

Usps was your passport office.

Best strategy is to book a passport appointment as soon as you know the date of oath.

Otherwise book refundable international travel reservations and get an emergency appoibtment.

All I needed to do was to update the website over and over until an appointment popped up. Only took a few minutes, people cancel their appointments all the time, snag one of those.

If you are requesting a passport for the first time it has to be in person at an approved acceptance site i.e, USPS

Keeping checking everyday and go out a little further than where you live. We did that and after a couple of days one opened up not close to where we live but doable. You'll have to grab whatever time and date is open though, but keep trying.

I had to book my wifes appointment over an hour away at a middle of nowhere post office to get an appointment even 3 weeks out. I scheduled it as soon as she passed the citizenship test, and knew oath would be in 3 weeks. Look in the middle of nowhere for a post office there. Might have to drive 2 to 3 hours out to get it done, but not much choice. Some libraries do it, but they fill up fast. If needed fly to the middle of Iowa, or Ohio, easy to get appointments there. or find a state closer to you that has appointments. There are a few in Montana also that always have appointments. Or you suck it up and pay a few hundred extra at one of the agencies that will do it for you.
