I should also say no offense to people who enjoy these parties. I know some people do. I just have been to too many and have not enjoyed them myself.

Oh definitely, same here. My step-mom hosts the candle ones, but I had never really asked her about the process. That's great for her, it's just not my cup of tea.

God I HATE when ppl bring stuff to the office to sell for their kids. I also hate when ppl come into the office to try to sell stuff. If I want candy, I'll go to the store and buy it!

Our IT at my last company had his girl scout daughter come around with an order form every year. She was getting pretty bold with that last round, saying that she'd sick her Dad on anyone who didn't order...but it was all in jest...I think. She'd make a good mobster.

Be happy! The jewelry shows are a total rip off. The jewelry quality wise is close to what you get at the dollar store, just that you pay $50-200 for each piece. It amazes me that people are fooled into it. I wonder how fake silver earrings can cost $70, when the same kind in real 925 silver can cost $20. The "guarantees" they give you are quite bogus themselves. You have to keep every single piece of paper from your order form, to the tiny paper attached to your box otherwise no return policy for you :P

The way I think they suck you in is, you feel guilty for coming & not ordering, so you say "ok, i'll order just one item" the cheapest item is say $30. So the order taker lady says "if you order $35, you'll get xx% off the next item" and it cascades that way. They make you think you are getting this swell deal, when in fact, you end up paying $200 for $10 worth of jewelry. Then in the end, they tell you "want free jewelry? then host a party yourself" so you say ok, then either have a lady calling you twice a day until you sign up, or you do sign up and worry which poor suckers you'll invite to attend your party.

I only speak of experience, cause I had 2 friends sucker me into these parties, but NO MORE!

Jewlery isn't my thing either but I would go if it were a good friend. I don't feel bad about not buying if it's really something that doesn't interest me. I do understand how you would feel obligated to buy though since this is the purpose for the party in the first place. I'm sure a lot of other people will be buying and no one will notice if you don't.

I feel the problem is the opposite. If you have a good friend throwing the party, I think you would feel more inclined to buy so that they do good, you help them out, and get their rewards, etc. It was my experience when one of my friends threw a candle party, I ended up buying the cheapest thing, tealights, just because I felt bad not buying anything from my friend. So I don't know! I'd feel less bad not buying from a stranger.

no one will notice if you don't.

They notice alright. Cause at the end of the party, when the guests leave, the host of the party gets a summary of everyone and how much they ordered. The host gets the discount based either on sales amount$ or on how many people placed orders. (the one i went to was like $20 off for each person who placed an order, regardless of how much the order was)

The host wants you to buy so they get $$$ cause you ordered. The head lady wants you to buy cause she gets a percent of the sale amount. Ponzi scheme.

The only stuff I ever bought was tupperware and candles..ok, the candles was pretty much money thrown out of the window but the Tupperware stuff is really good. Like I said, depending on who is inviting you and who is doing the presentation, they can be fun!

Haha, I was actually hosting one and invited both my grandmas and they ended up buying stuff for ME, trying to beat each other..lol

So I was invited to a "jewelry party" by my cousin. I've never gone to one of these types of things before - tupperware, candles, jewelry, etc. I am not interested in buying any jewelry. My instinct is that by attending one of these parties, you basically agree to make a purchase. Should I decline the invitation if I have no intention of buying anything? The invite talked about a girls' night with margaritas, fun, and jewelry, or something like that. So is it a real party or what???

Help me out!

Don't go; it's a scam.
