Offer Letter - provide SSN before start date

If someone goes to the SSA office and requests a SSN, it is always mailed out and takes about 2 weeks.

They don't give you a physical card right then and there at the appointment, but are they able to tell you what your new SSN is at the office?

There doesn't seem to be a consistent timeline for when  a social security card arrives in the mail after entering US with a DS-260 checked for a SSN,

Wouldn't it be worth it to just go to the SSA immediately after arriving and apply for a SSN even if the box on DS-260 was checked? At least you would know for sure that you will be able to work in 2 weeks.

I asked for it, but they said they couldn’t tell me the number because the application needs to process and they don’t know the number.

I called after a week and a half and asked for my number and they said they cannot access numbers on first applications until after the card gets mailed.
so I didn’t know my SSN until I got the card in the mail, although I tried asking for it.
