Becareful with that, your period is a natural cycle and it happens for reasons. If you stop it without like a hysterectomy or another procedure by your dr you can really mess your body up.

But again, when you're on the pill, you don't HAVE any periods, and it is anything but a natural cycle!

Or do you mean 'be careful with that' as in 'be careful with taking the pill'?

i mean lots of ppl try to stop their periods with pills bc they dont want them anymore, there are pills out there to stop your period but its not a forever stoping. im saying its not safe IMHO bc woman have periods for a reason and you dont want to stop it in that way.

But if you're taking the pill... you're ALREADY stopping your periods - all of them!

Gaaahhh... this thread is just reminding me that my supply of pills from the UK will be running out pretty soon (well, I think I have 2 or 3 packs left)... I still have absolutely no idea about this stuff in the US, and will no doubt have to change to a totally different pill. Not looking forward to that!

I'm also not looking forward to having to change next year. The pill I've been using in the UK has worked out perfectly and it's different from the one I used to use in the US. I'm hoping my GP will allow me the full future amount possible before the move. How many months were you able to get?

My lovely GP gave me a six month supply even though he knew I was about to leave the country any day... that seemed like tons at the time, but now I actually have to start thinking about sorting out a new pill for when they run out! I wish I'd managed to stockpile a few more packs, now... I've been through a few different brands that REALLY didn't agree with me, and would rather not switch to something that sends me completely psycho (or any of the other utterly un-delightful side effects out there) if I can possibly avoid it!

Maybe take the package from your pill to an ob/gyn here and see if he/she can find something that comes very close to the pill you are currently taking?

That's what I wanted to do, but then when I ran out of packages, we decided to TTC..lol

I was on low-dose pills before I moved to Italy for a few years. Over there, I was told there was nothing equivalent and they put me on the lowest dose available, but supposedly it was higher than what I was used to. I had no problems adjusting to the higher dose. However, when I came back to the U.S. and went back on the lower dose, there were a couple times when I just missed my period entirely. I don't know my experience is typical.

I'm not allowed any sort of Birth Control Pill whatsoever, whether to stop my period, regulate it, or not. I could have tried some sort of Hormone Progesterone only then future biopsys. *UGH*..... Painful, irregular periods for the past 10 years, consulted with an Obgyn, both us came to same decision, that given my age and family history, i will be period free however after august 15th :( (Hysterectomy) is my only option. :(:(

I had a hysterectomy just 3 months ago. it is a sad thing to have to do. I went thru depression over it and even didnt want to do it. But pls believe me if your dr says it needs to be done then trust your dr. i had endometriosis real bad and she adv i have it done. when i did, they did a biop on my uterus and there were traces of uter cancer. Its a sad, and if its your only option, it means it is the right option. I went thru 10 yrs of pain, cysts and many weeks in the hospital, since ive had the hysterectomy, i have never felt better. im painfree, i have more energy, i feel healthier, and being on the estrogen has made a big difference in my life as well. im 31 yrs old in case you wanted to know.

if you need anyone to talk to, you can PM me, i just went thru this and i hope i can be of help and comfort. (F)

Sorry to hear that, MariaDane, and sorry you had to go through that, too, Ionescu. Sounds like you feel a million per cent better for it, though. (F)

Thank You, Ionescu, I've gone through the Endo Biopsys, got the results back, Complex Hyperplasia w/Atypia, so i guess i've made the right decision, although its rather scarey due to the fact that my USC husband works away from home so much and its doubtful he'll even be here when i'm do to have the surgery done. I've have his parents here which is a big help, but it wont be the same without him here. I will be glad when the surgery is over and done with, then iI can start to heal, which i've heard will take some time, rest and more rest, gentle exercise i guess to get me on my feet faster will help i suppose. *sigh*

There's about 60000000 different brands of birth control pills out there. Look at the percentages & types of hormones on your UK pills and there's probably an American equivalent.

:) I think I'll take the pack & the leaflet with all the hormone percentages listed & show it to a doctor (when I find one, that is... I don't even know where you go to get contraception in the US - normal GP type doctor, special family planning place.... tis a mystery, and one I haven't paid nearly enough attention to solving!), and hopefully there will be something similar available. I'll just try to resist any 'why don't you try THIS newfangled modern one, it's soooo much better' - been there, done that, don't fancy doing it again if I can possibly avoid it!

..... That said, I don't think it works as well if you take ortho-tricyclen-lo continuously because the first week of pills isn't strong enough to keep the breakthrough bleeding from being triggered by the hormone drop. Call your doctor and maybe she can prescribe a change of pill or suggest a course of action.

I totaly agree with you, the problem is I am going to be with my husband in less that a month, I also have just started taking the pill less than a week ago (sunday after my period) I am pretty sure my gyn will say NO (again same info you have about tri orth cylen low), now if she wants me to take a different kind of pills to avoid the period, that won t be of any help because I need it sooon  and I can t wait till my next cycle to start a new kind of pills.

I guess my problem is these NEW UNTESTED PILLS ... :(

You know, it's worth a shot. You could start the new pills at the end of the three weeks of the ortho-lo pack, skipping the placebo week and just transitioning that way. So you'd 'bump' up the start of next month by one week, and start that month with a monophasic pill.

yes LOTS AND LOTS of rest and relaxation. Do not try to rush the healing. When they say to stay in bed then stay in bed. i didnt, i tried to do things 3 days after the surgery and i ended up having a longer recovery process, im stubborn :) i was out of work for 2 months recovering. and get you some stool softners, you get constipated after the surgery, and constipation pain along with the surgery pain, its hell, the stool softners help ease atleast one of the pains.

I agree with the other say. Having a period while on the pills is only due to the decrease of the hormones in your blood stream, thus the low pills and the non active pills. I am on a Canadian pill called Marvelon, and its US twin is called Desogen. Its a 21 days pack with same dosage for all the pills, and I stop it 7 days every month to get a period. If I want to skip a period I just open a new pack and keep taking the pills with no stop.

There are 2 ways the pills work. One of them (the way my pills work) is that the constant hormones in the blood tells your brain you are pregnant. So you stop ovulating, and then your body doesnt fill your uterus with the endometrium. The period itself is only the release of the thick unused endometrium each month, which builds up during ovulation to prepare for a possible pregnancy. So if your body thinks you are pregnant, its not gonna happen, so no period. It is wrong to think that the uterus is filled up with that endometrium and if you dont have a period then you are "full". The uterus is actually empty until to lower the dosage with low pills or no pills and there is nothing to evacuate. I agree to say that if you think you mess your body up by not having the monthly period, you shouldnt take the pills at all because it is in fact messing with your natural cycle.

There is already a pill that exists called Seasonale, meant to make you have a period every season, thus 4 times a year. So you take pills for 4 months then stop a week, then start back for another 4 months, etc. I plan to ask the Doctor about it once im almost done with my Canadian supply of pills.

Here's the link

to stop your period is not healthy, what part of "your period is a natural cycle" am i not getting clear? if you dont need to stop your period (IE hysterectomy) then dont. The pills do stop it to some point, im not saying "stay away from the pill bc you wont have a period". thats something you cant help when on the pill, all i did was make a simple statement about IN GENERAL pills and stopping your period. If your reading something else in my statements thats not my fault
