Hello !

I ma travelling to USA in 2 weeks on a tourist visa. I have been in the USA fro 4 years on a student visa and I returned to my home country last year. I have received tourist visa this year and I am planning to go and visit my friends and travel a little. During my visa interview I put intended length of stay 2 months but I changed my plans recently and I would like to stay for 3 months. My question is if I will have some trouble at the port of entry after changing the length of stay. I have return ticket booked and I will have it printed.  Mostly, I am staying at my friends house but I have a rough plan of the places where I want to go. I also have a bank statement showing that I have enough funds to support myself during my stay. Has anyone changed their length of stay after visa was approved?

I think it is fairly common for plans to change from the time of filling out the DS160 and the time of the trip.  In the end, CBP will determine the length of your authorized stay, so it is advised to be truthful with CBP with any questions they ask, but there is no requirement to offer CBP any additional information they do not ask for.

Good Luck!

CBP will determine your length of stay. You not always guaranteed 6 months.

Yeah I understand that CBP is going to be the one who is going to determine how long I can stay. I was just wondering if this change will put me in some trouble while I go through the interview at the border and I was trying to see if someone has done it before.  Thank you for your answer

Most times I entered the US on a tourist visa CBP asked me how long I was planning on staying.

I'm not sure if they will have access to your interview questions when you enter... so, they might not like that you've changed your plans but they might also be fine with it...

If they don't think you raised any red flags they'll allow you in BUT if they think you might try to stay longer (and extend your stay while you are in the US). They could only allow you to stay for the 2 months you're planning...

You are way overthinking this. If asked tell them how long you intend to stay and that is all. Enjoy your travels.

No, just tell them how long (your current intended duration) you want to stay at port of entry if asked. Most likely your will be given a 6 months stay regardless but not always. Visa is issued but DOS but your stay is determined by DHS.

Do not change what you put. You can decide what you want after you get into the country.

Have you heard of someone who got into trouble because they changed the intended length of stay ? Just asking out of curiosity. The only thing that I am chaining is the length of stay - everything else stay as I put in the visa application. Thank you for your answer

The problem is when you get into overstays, or when you try to use a tourist visa to live in the US.

Reasonable use of the privilege of a B visa is fine.

Yeah I totally understand that tourist visa is not for living in US and this is not my plan. I have return ticket and commitments in my home country that I need to get back to. I am hoping that  this one month extended stay won't be an issue. Thank you very much for your comment.
