My experience so far!

My contract ended on December 31 and I moved to the US on January 15. On January 22, I filed for EI online using my current American address.

About a week later I received an access code to access my file in their online system and two EI report cards that I'm supposed to fill out (whether I've worked, whether I've looked for work, etc.). I was planning to call them to find out if I needed to fill these out since I'm here on a K1 and am not eligible to work yet. Before I could do this, I got another letter from them the next day, this time from the Interstate Claims. It was a questionnaire about my status in the US that I needed to fill out and fax to them, along with a copy of my passport and of my visa. I faxed these this morning. About an hour after I sent the fax, I called the Interstate Claims number to check if they had received the info. I talked to a helpful guy named Patrick who told me they had received my documents. He told me that there was nothing they could really do now until I received my EAD card (which I knew) and that I should fax them a copy of that once I'd received it. Once they have my EAD, they will reactivate my claim and I should start receiving payments if everything is in order.

I also asked him if I needed to complete the bi-weekly EI reports while waiting for my EAD. He said that wasn't necessary and that those are effectively useless before I get my EAD. So I guess everything is on hold until then, fingers crossed that I don't run into any administrative problems!

Yea that is about right. Can't get any EI until you have either EAD or Green Card and no sense doing reports. Patrick is a nice guy to deal with.

Good luck.

I'm in the same situation as you, but I filled the biweekly reports cards cause I was told by a very nice women that I'm doing good to call them and fill this cards over the phone, then they send me every 02 weeks same things, like that my file stay open,

Now I got my EAD approval, wait for the cards and will fax them a copy. so when I called them yesterday to figure out the fax number and to complete my biweekly reports card they told me that my file is still open and on hold for EAD.

Finally I got approved today for my EI (eligible for 36 weeks), thank you to vj members for their help.

I got the max, 524$/week minus 25% tax will have 393$/week. its will helps a lot to help my husband.

I have a question for former EI receiver, how much % will get back for the 25% tax paid.

Thanks for any feedback

Very little but it depends on how much tax credits you already have and maybe Canadian income vs USA income. Not sure on that. I know my 2013 return was a 1/4 of what I expected.

I found the following the Service Canada PDF. I called the number contained in the document (info below) and someone answered straight away. She was very helpful and provided information on what do to and not to do (doing this all in prep for next week) Thought I would share in case folks find it helpful.

I have not had time to read thru all the posts, sorry for asking if it was answered previously.

I am a US Citizen with Permanent Resident status in Canada who has worked full time for the past 16 years for Canadian companies (since I became a Landed Resident and was allowed to work).

Does this mean I might qualify for Canadian EI while looking for a job in the US upon moving back? or is it just for Canadian Citizens?

Marcia;

There is an agreement between the US and Canada, so as long as you have a Canadian SIN (which you would have had to work in Canada) then yes you qualify, assuming you have worked the correct number of weeks to. Have a look at www.servicecanada.gc.ca/eng/ei/publications/outsidecanada.pdf. I would recommend calling the number in the document. FYI, I have confirmed that any payments will only be made to a Canadian bank account in Canadian funds.

I know the Canadian resident is eligible because they're leaving the country to live with their spouse, but in the current situation, are you sure the USC will receive EI if the resignation was voluntary?

I would still apply, worst it gets denied.
