this may be a silly question, but I'm asking it anyways....

my interview is coming up soon, and I expect to be moving this summer. I teach, and I will probably be retiring from my teaching job prior to leaving. how does EI come into play? or doesn't it if I retire? i've read the rules online but there's not a heck of a lot of info about moving with spouse and collecting EI. Something tells me I won;t be able to retire, move and collect.....humm???? complicated!!!!

then there's my job is a teacher, who is under contract. all would be well if I was quitting mid year but since I'll be quitting in June in summer, I wonder about this too.

just when life seemed like it was getting less complicated....it gets all messed up again!!!! gesh!!!

Scratch that last comment, I get my first EI cheque on Thursday. Yippee!

Hi there up in Spokane! That's great news. I am sending my copy of my EAD today. How are things going? I'm heading back to the Maritmes this July.

What's that there? You're heading home? Lucky. I'm looking at maybe Thanksgiving. Are you getting a green card interview or are you using AP?

I have my green card combined with the AP. I'll just show that card and I should be good to go. I have my interview for the AOS on july 10th.

I think you mean EAD not green card.

Oh, back in January, I had a lovely chat with a nice, young man who was supposed to note on my file something about interstate claim. When I got my EAD, I called the interstate number to resume my claim (I'd been on EI while waiting for my K-1 visa). I got the answering service, left a message saying I was calling to re-open my claim as an interstate applicant. Next day, I get a call but couldn't answer. The voicemail told me I had no interstate claim and that I was to call the number for regular humans.

I call the number for regular humans. First, the girl tells me that Canadians living in the States can't collect EI. I told her to put me on hold, find a supervisor and have a chat. She comes back, "oh yes, you can." We go through another 15 minutes of her checking my claim, putting me on hold, checking with her supervisor, and checking my claim again.

She comes back and says, "Oh, you have to call another department. Here's the number."

Guess which number. That's right. Interstate claims. Sigh ...

Luckily, I got Brad, who was very helpful and gave me the fax number to which I sent a copy of my EAD letter. I called on Monday to ensure it was received and got Patrick, who was super and charming (so I bet he's hot). Next day, a woman called me (I still have no idea what her name is ... Miriam, Mimyam, not sure, she spoke too fast), asked me all the questions that I used to answer online, and now I'm just waiting for the money to show up in my bank account. She said today but nothing so far.

If I don't see it by noon, I'll be calling.

Good morning everyone.

Happy Canada Day.

With my visa being approved yesterday, my wife and I are starting to make a plans, so I thought I would ask everyone that has applied for EI as a IR1/CR1 visa holder what information I need and the process of getting this started. I do believe I have to wait until I cross the border to begin this process.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

fairly simply.

fill out the online application http://www.servicecanada.gc.ca/eng/ei/application/employmentinsurance.shtml

make sure her work ROE says quit due to marriage relocation (mine just said quit but the EI people called my work and asked why I quit and they were told the reason was because of moving due to spouse and didnt have any issues)

once you fill it out someone from EI will call you and do a questionnaire and then you will have to wait until everything is processed. you will always call the international EI number to fill out the biweekly reports, i think its posted in this thread somewhere.

there is a two week waiting period for EI in which you wont get any money.

I plan on quitting my job Sep 1, 2015, Then move October 10, 2015 to the USA. Do i apply online before I move to the states as I heard that we are supposed to file within 4 weeks of quitting? Or shoudl I apply when I'm down there which would be after 4 weeks? Also, I heard that filing in the US would be easier as it wouldnt have to be transferred to interstate claims? I wish there was a special guide to filing in VJ...the thread is so long! PLus since things change all the time, it would be good to have an updated version
