If I'm on EI in Canada and I sneak down to Florida for a couple weeks to see my hubby, do you think the government will catch on? And if I do get in trouble will it affect my immigration (we're still waiting for case completion with NVC)?

I know you guys can't really say for sure, but I'd still like to hear some opinions

Sorry if it's a bit off topic for this forum

If they do, well, it wont be a happy ending!!! Always best to tell the truth!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I'm sure if you did get caught, they would deduct more $$$ than the time you were away!! What are the chances of getting caught?? who knows, probably slim.

Anyone know what happens if you have an open claim in Canada - and then get laid off in the US? Could you technically get EI again ?

Argh! You didn't get laid off did you? Have you still been sending in your cards or did they stop that when you got a job? I guess it depends on whether they actually closed your claim or not. A call to the office is in order I think. *hugs*

On my note, I think they are closing my claim because I think I make too much with self-employment (which I declare to them on each set of cards). After I sent in my last set of cards my online message changed to that they have new information and that they are going to make a decision. Bear in mind that I have not received any money from them as I've been self-employed since I got my EAD. I wonder if I should just call/write them to close my claim or wait for the denial.

It's possible that they closed the claim when you told them to stop sending cards. I think check into what you get through the State of CT first and take that over EI (since they tax you so much on out of country payments).

Yeah, maybe I"ll just wait to see what their "decision" is. I really think they're just going to close it.

Hopefully you'll get this all sorted out soon! *hugs*

  • 2 weeks later...

Just called the 1-877-486-1650 number to officially file! But I got a voicemail  asking for my name, SIN # and phone number...

So I left that but thought it weird that I didn't get to talk to a rep.................................

It is normal. They are very busy, but they always call you back the next day!

And I would suggest you, I filed on the internet, and it worked very good. It's a long form that takes about 30 min I would say to fill. Not sure if you can do this over the phone, I usually called them when they were receiving my cards too late to fill them over the phone....

But to start your claim it takes more time.
