*crosses fingers* I applied for EI today! Here's hoping that nothing catastrophic will happen.

I spoke to a really nice woman on the phone who gave me awesome instructions. A few false starts here and there, but overall I'm hoping to get my packet in the mail soon. (Okay, so I'm dying for something to do -_-)

The only thing I really need to do is get my ROE from a past employer - since I have absolutely no paystubs, I'm going to hope that a few emails from that job will suffice for proof of employment.

When you send them the information .. make sure to include a copy of your passport visa stamp showing the entry with a K1 .. and you will need your ROE as well

is there a way to check your status online... i doubt it huh?

Status of what? Payments and claim information after it's been approved there is.. http://www1.servicecanada.gc.ca/en/ei/appl..._preamble.shtml

You will need the 4 digit code from the bottom of your first set of cards (like a pin).

but as far as checking things online before they approve you for benefits no go.. nope..

Believe its 25% right off the bat?? Maybe its more, been awhile. But one may be able to get some of that back if you file cdn taxes! Forget the form to do so, sooo early in the morn, lol

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I can't see the archived thread-it just sends me to a login page.

the hubby doesn't want to call-he just wants to fill out the online form. is that going to be possible? I'm trying to tread very lightly here cause he was really expecting to get a job right away (there are companies that keep saying that they really want him but the next project is going to start "next week").

Anyway, now it looks like he should file for EI. So, he's asked for his ROE-the tiny company that he worked for for 14 years didn't automatically give it to him. he's got his visa stamp and SSN card. Anything else he's going to need to file?

thanks

met summer 1999, summer 2000 hooked up-whoo hoo summer fling

summer fling failed to fizzle, married 2003

I-130 mailed 12/15/03

4/1/04 no word from NE contacted senators office, app found

NOA1 4/13/04

Gave up on ridiculously long US process-started Canadian

12/4/04 submitted app

LSS app returned because of missed signatures, lost in transit, resubmitted in June

9/28/05 landed, yippie

10/4/05 fly back to US to "finish up Master's" lose mind and switch to PhD

Damn it back to the US process

3/something/2005 finally get NOA2, no idea why it took so long

4/15/07 get case approval from NVC

8/9/07 Montreal here we come

10/14/07 hubby activated his visa

This is the list for K-1 that I have (you'd have to tweak it for CR-1)

- Copy of ROE

- Copy of I-94

- Copy of Marraige Licence

- Copy of NOA for EAD & AOS

- Copy of SSA "Work Authorization" statements listed With Applicable sections CLEARLY marked.

I did apply online with no worries (remember that your province is ON for filing because the out of Canada claims unit is in ON), but you will need to mail in the ROE & the supporting documentation to them (or fax it) to the out of country claims office.. Can your husband contact his last employer and ask for one to be faxed to him in the US?

Found this brochure as well today very helpful -

I was a cr-1. All I submitted was my ROE, SSN card ( i think). A Cr-1 doesnt get a EAD or a I-94. I may have submitted a copy of our wedding cert. Not sure why he doesnt want to call. Always best to get the answer from them, lol For the most part they are great to deal with.

Why would you have to give the CDNs a copy of the SSN card Flames? Just curious mostly.. that doesn't make sence to me why they would even want that.

Its been awhile (Jan 05) since I applied for EI!! I called and simply sent in what they asked for. Was all pretty painless. Well except that i got denied at first (was military and i had a contract, blah blah) but I appealed and won,lol

And when dealing with the gov't, stuff doesn't have to make sense, lol

Right you are Flames I had to send a photo copy of the passport, the K-1 Visa and the I-94. I think I sent along a copy of the Marriage Cerificate too

thanks, his old office manager is sending him the ROE today-we and she didn't know that he would need it but she's trying to get it together quickly. I guess we could send them a copy of our marriage cert-we've been married 4 years so it's not quite like the K1 where the visa is dependent on getting married quickly.

anyway, thanks for the replies-especially the thing about address in ON

Flames-I assume that he doesn't want to call cause he's a boy and boys are weird, but you being a boy and questioning that reasoning may make me go from the general "boys are weird" to the more specific "hubby is weird" It's a happier world view for me to just generalize and not think too hard about my particular boy being particularly weird.
