We are talking Canadian government. Tiny vision..the EAD is printed large for them.. :lol: I don't think it matters, they just want to be sure of the legal right to work, before she can start collecting $$$. Hope it all goes through for you quickly.

I can summarize what you need to do. EI is Employment Insurance, very similar to 'Unemployment' in the U.S. and will allow your husband to receive EI payments in lieu of a paycheck while he looks for

Hey all - update from the EI claim after moving here. Once we leave Canada and have eligibility to work in USA (which you would with Spousal visa, not sure about Fiance), we get 'transferred' to Inter

Never mind! Service Canada called me back this morning to let me know they've approved my EAD, I should start seeing payments as early as tomorrow, or as late as next Monday.

they actually wanted a NOTARIZED copy of my visa with my stamp in it -- it was kind of a pain in the butt...

Just to be sure that I can work, I guess but I was confused by teh fact that they needed it to be notarized.

Mel applied for EI 2 weeks ago, and last friday, we got back in the mail a letter requesting additional information, visa type information. It requests a copy of the EAD and the visa. Should we include a copy of my wifes green card as well? I don't see any harm in submitting additional information, but I'd rather be sure about it. Any thoughts? :unsure:

Is there a guide on filing for EI, or do I have to read through this whole thread? :)

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied,that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

That's cool sdw... hope it wasn't too much of a run around. I find that they're iffy about whether or not they actually send cards so keep an eye on that and if it's taking too long, call Donna or the interstates claim office and they an help you you.

Sign up at Service canada so you can keep track of the dates and payments on line -- it's very handy that.

Claim got approved, waiting on first payment.

Question for you all,

I just started a new job in March and sent my cards in stating that I had started a full time job and what hours I worked and what $$ I will be receiving. The first two weeks were paid training/shadowing, but the 1st week only came to 28 hours, the second was 41 or 42 I believe.

Will they stop sending me cards now?

Will I get a partial payment of EI from the first week of work? (Because it was less than 40 hours) What do they classify as part-time?

yes probably - it will depend more on what you earned in the period, rather then the # of hours you worked (but I could be wrong). My first pay was only a couple of days so I claimed EI during that time as well....,once I got a full pay...I didn't meet the criteria anymore and I cancelled the claim with them and closed it.
